10 things to do in and around Cardiff for under £30
We’re now well into half term and that often means parents start to run out of ideas for ways in which they can entertain their children. Staying in can become boring quickly so make life less boring and try out one of the following ways to keep the kids entertained in Cardiff for under £30!
1. Go fruit-picking! There are lots of places in and around Cardiff that you can visit for a few hours and take home some freshly picked fruit at the same time! I recently took my three year old twins to Hendrewennol which is a pick your own fruit farm. It was a great way to pass the time. At just £1 entry per person it’s not only a cheap day out, it’s also an enjoyable one too. We picked lots of strawberries, raspberries, tayberries and blackcurrants. We’re planning a return trip soon so that we can pick some blueberries too! Of course you have to pay for the fruit that you pick so the total cost for our day out was £9.48! In addition to the fruit picking kids can also climb the hay bales!
2. Visit London for the day. This is easily do-able for under £30, for example you can find some excellent deals here of things to do. This Sunday dinner for two represents great value for money. Plus you can keep travel costs down to a minimum by using a coach service as oppose to the train! For lots more great deals click here.
3. Take the kids to Cefn Mably Farm. Cefn Mably is suitable for children of all ages. They have lots of animals, including a petting area where you can stroke guinea pigs and rabbits, plus they also have horse rides. On addition to the animals they have an outdoor park and some ride-on tractors available. Inside you can find a soft-play area and a café.
4. Warren Mill Farm is one that I’ve recently discovered and it suitable for children of all ages, but I would recommend children aged 12 months and over. There is no soft play area with this farm and everything is outdoors. One of the things that I love about this farm is that there are some animals roaming around free. Prairie dogs can be found popping their heads out of their burrows whilst chickens, ducks and rabbits roam free. There’s a park and some ride-on toys too.
5. Techniquest Science Museum is always a favourite for a rainy day. This science museum has plenty of things to keep children entertained and in awe of science. From the water play section to the music section upstairs, Techniquest is always a firm favourite for us. They also have a toddler day once a month in which additional activities such as play dough, crafts and colouring are put on.
6. The cinema. There are lots of cinemas in Cardiff, but we like Odeon in the Red Dragon Centre down Cardiff Bay. On a Saturday and Sunday they do a kids cinema club which means ticket prices start at just £2.50.
7. Another farm we like to visit is Thornhill Farm Shop. It’s less than a five minute drive from our home and I can easily spend up to three hours there. It’s not a big farm, but the kids still enjoy a visit. As the name suggests there is a farm shop, plus there’s also a café and an outdoor play area for children.
8. Victoria Park is perfect for a warm, sunny day. Grab a picnic blanket, make some sandwiches and pack the kids swimsuits because Victoria Park has it all! There’s lots of green space for children to kick a ball around, a park and an outdoor pool. There’s also a snack bar serving hot and cold food.
9. Barry Sidings. This is a lovely country park situated in the Rhondda Valley. As well as a lake which usually has a few ducks swimming in, there’s also a lovely park and picnic area. There’s lots of green space too so you can bring a football along for a kick-about and even a picnic.
10. Jump 123. You can’t beat a good soft play centre to keep the kids entertained. Jump can be found in Llanishen, Cardiff and is suitable from birth onward. Split into various sections you can find a toddler section which has a big trampoline in, ball pit, bouncy castle, slides, ride-on toys and a two level small soft play area. The bigger soft play area is spacious and so much fun! This is from personal experience as I have taken my three years old through there and I’m not sure who had the most fun, me or them! There’s also a café serving hot and cold food.

Oh I love techniquest, I had no idea there was one in Cardiff now. Some great ideas. We've been fruit picking every week this holiday, our local fruit farm have a few animals that the children can see and a little park. They just adore it there and would go every week for the whole year if they could!x
