Our Twins First Holiday

July 29, 2013

We have not long returned from our twins first holiday. We went to Menorca. Well, eight of us went! There was Twin Daddy and his three children (my step children), my mother-in-law, the twins and of course myself!

We were up at 6am and after we all had some breakfast, we did some last minute packing and decided to give the girls their lunch an hour early so they could have a decent nap before we left at 12.30pm.
The journey to the airport went well and we were there within half an hour of leaving.

I was really surprised how quickly the next few hours went. We decided not to bring the double pushchair right up to the plane, so checked it in instead. R and M wanted to walk and explore everything!

After a quick sandwich, we were boarding the plane. I am so glad that the plane was full of babies, toddlers and children! It made me feel less nervous and worried.

Both girls absolutely loved the plane! They had a few tears but nothing major. Turns out we really didn’t need to bring books and toys to keep them entertained on the plane because the new surroundings and other babies kept them occupied! Both girls enjoyed standing in the aisles and looking around.

When we landed our luggage came quickly so we boarded our coach to the hotel. It’s no surprise that both girls fell asleep on the coach. All the excitement of the plane and being abroad had worn them out!

When we arrived at the hotel (which was amazing by the way!) we left our suitcases in our rooms and made our way down for dinner.

One of the biggest things that I was worried about was the girls not eating. I went to get them some food and put as much variety of food on their plates that I could! R ate a load of chicken nuggets and chips and M had pizza and chips. M also ate a whole banana yogurt and R had some chocolate ice cream.
It was around 9.30pm by the time we finished eating and after a little wander and nose around the hotel we retired to our rooms for the night.

It did take us a little longer than usual to help R and M go to sleep, but they eventually drifted off around 10.30/11pm and they slept well in the bed between Twin Daddy and

Talking of sleep, the girls slept so well on holiday! They didn’t wake in the night and I know they were going to bed later than usual (around 11pm), but I did enjoy the 8am lay ins!

We spent every day by the pool and one day we had a little wander to the shops. The hotel had two swimming pools. One large, cold water pool and one smaller, warm water pool. M definitely preferred being in the larger pool being held by daddy, whereas R preferred the smaller pool because she could walk around on the steps in the water.

The girls also loved watching the little birds that would fly around and land by the pool. They would both wave to them!

During the evenings the hotel put on a variety of shows and the first night was fab! R stood on my lap, dancing away all night much to the delight of fellow tourists! M sat on daddy’s lap and enjoyed clapping along to the music and watching the show.

The remainder of the evenings were a bit more awkward because the girls wanted to walk around and didn’t want to watch the shows really. I think the mixture of heat and long days made them a bit irritable, but I think they were a bit bored in the evenings. I would have liked it if the hotel had a little soft play area for children.

One major thing that Twin Daddy faced on holiday was M becoming very clingy. She didn’t want to be held by anyone other than daddy and if he even left her sights for a split second she would get upset. I think M is very much a home bird! In her own surroundings she is a happy, confident little girl, but take her out of her comfort zone and it’s a different story.

Having said that I was really pleased at how well both girls adapted to the holiday. One thing I was concerned about was getting the girls back into their routine once we arrived back home, but they’ve slipped right back into it which is great. I was also worried about whether R would go back to sleeping in her cot because she had spent all holiday sharing a bed with us, however she’s gone back to her cot with ease.

I would just like to say thank you to my mother in law who paid for us all to go on holiday. Had she not have made this generous offer we wouldn’t have had a holiday for some years to come because we are saving for a house deposit, so thank you!

How old was your little one when you first took them abroad? Did they enjoy their first holiday?

Sounds like you had a fantastic time 🙂 our little one was 4 months old when he went on his 1st holiday to Spain. Much like your experience, he was excellent on the plane & loved the big pool with Daddy…. fingers crossed he'll be same this year 🙂

Ha great read, everything about it is spookily like my life…

We are going next Tuesday from Cardiff airport, with the MIL and our 14 month twin girls.

I too have one fair (practically bald twin) and one with a mop of brown hair.

    I am a blogger too…

I’m pretty apprehensive about it all to be honest, I hope it goes as smoothly as yours went. We have choosen Benidorm this year as the flight was nice and short, this is what I am dreading….they have ants in their pants!!!
