Is it possible to feed two year old twins on £60 a week?

I remember the days well before we had children. In particular I remember just how far money used go.

Our weekly food shop would come in at £60 a week for the two of us, sometimes less!

Since having children that amount has increased substantially! When you factor in nappies, dummies and all the numerous other things children need there’s not much change out of £100!

According to the Natwest Cost of Raising a Child Calculator it costs £30 a week to feed a two year old. For obvious reasons I’ve doubled that meaning the national average of feeding two year old twins is £60. I don’t buy two of everything though as some meals are too big for one child and are therefore shared, but I wonder just how much does it cost us to feed our twins?

Total per week: £32.10

That actually surprised me! £32.10 per week to feed two 2 year olds!

I thought it would be closer to £50!

Our girls don’t have big appetite though and with meals like spaghetti and meatballs and risotto they share one meal between them and they still don’t eat it all!

I’m surprised!

They do have a few other snacks in between such as cake or a biscuit so I guess if I added in the cost of that it may be closer to £35/£40 a week.

Of course on top of food you also have to buy nappies, wet wipes etc so I would for two 2 years old £60 a week is a good average if you include nappies etc.

  1. I'm surprised that it wasn't more too! Our whole weekly food shop comes in at about €62 which is about £52, that's for the three of us. We then go to Boots and spend about €50 on nappies, wipes and other toddler essentials once every two weeks. Supermarkets like Aldi really help bring the cost down.

  2. I'd hate to think how much ours is- the boys seem obsessed with eating us out of house and home, and whilst we've converted to frozen veg- the cost of the yoghurt and the fruit that they like seems extraordinary!

  3. Wow that is a lot lower than I expected. My food bill with jugs Potato and I is really higher than it should be. We eat the same food but I'm really bad at putting too much on his plate, so there's lots of waste. I really need to learn to economise more. This shows it really can be done 🙂
