Healthy School Snack Ideas

September 1, 2016
Our twin girls start full time school next week and I’m feeling a little uneasy about it. Previously in nursery, which is only two and a half hours, I haven’t had to think about food as the nursery provides the children with a healthy snack. Usually a crumpet, fruit or a wrap etc.

However, now that our girls are going into full time school, it’s something I need to think about. My husband and I have decided that the girls will have packed lunches. This is mainly for peace of mind, so that we know what they’re eating and how much they’re eating.

In the morning they get to have a snack so this will probably be a banana or a pack of Dairylea Dunkers etc, but in their lunchbox, I’m a bit stumped as to what to put in there to fill them up and give them energy for the rest of the day.

After doing a little research which mainly consisted of asking other mums and searching for the term ‘kids snacks’ on my ASDA shopping app, I thought I’d put together a list of healthy options. I hope it helps!

  • Fruit – banana, blueberries, strawberries, oranges (pre-peeled if your child can’t peel it themselves), apple, melon, dried fruit, pretty much any fruit that won’t go off quickly!
  • Handful of dried cereal
  • Yoghurt – Squeezy ones might be best to avoid your child loosing spoons, but make sure your child can open it themselves
  • Cheese such as babybel or cheese strings, dairy lea dunkers
  • Cereal or fruit bar
  • Biscuits
  • Vegetable sticks such as cucumber, carrots, peppers, celery
  • Cheese and crackers
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Raisins
  • Rice cakes
  • Popcorn
  • Pitta bread and dip such as hummus
  • Flapjacks
  • Muffins
  • Breadsticks
  • Jelly
  • Cocktail Saugage
  • Mini sausage roll

The odd treat such as mini cookies, jaffa cakes, a few squares of chocolate etc should be ok too!

I’ll also be putting in a travel sized pack of wet wipes to that they can wipe their hands and faces if need be.

It can be hard to think up new ideas that kids will enjoy eating, but that are also healthy and give kids energy, but hopefully you’ve found this list helpful!

What snacks would you suggest?

That's a good list. Freezing the yoghurt tubes works well, so they're still good and cold at snack time.

I think you've covered it all. Great list! Here in Scotland, Primary 1-3 get free lunch so I'm not too worried with my son's lunch cos I can go online and order it ahead for him, then I can choose the food myself rather than him choosing the same meat sandwich all the time whom he used to. I still provide morning snacks though which consist mainly of fruits, fruit juice and a biscuit. #binkylinky

We have some fussy eaters. Thankfully Buddy loves fruit and the school policy allows homemade buns.

    Some great ideas there.

Buddy went through a phase of taking in pieces of cucumber and yellow peppers.

Seems like a good list to me! We get free meals for primary 1-3 so I won't have to worry about this until Piglet is quite a bit older and will most likely ask for the things he wants #binkylinky

Great list! I'm such an advocate for healthy eating, people are amazed at how well my 2 year old eats! She loves all of the above snacks, but is also a massive fan of trail mix and cashew/pistachio nuts (she calls them shells, and loves breaking them open)! #binkylinky

It's a good list, but be warned, cereal bars may not be allowed as they can contain nuts. I'd also go into this with a flexible state of mind. Our eldest had packed lunches, but she now has school meals. you'd be surprised how healthy they are these days. She comes home telling us she's eaten mango and all types of things! More to the point, best of luck on the first day at school. Thanks for hosting #BinkyLinky

Great list. You've certainly got a lot of options so great variety for them. Ours love the veg stick dipped in houmous.

I use the same snack that you have listed 🙂 We also have:
    * Rolled up ham
    * Houmous to dip breadsticks/ham/peppers etc
My two year old is also mad on bombay mix lol
Good luck on the first day of school! #binkylinky
