When I Grow Up

January 14, 2014

When I was growing up I went through many phases of thinking about what I wanted be when I grew up. The earliest memory I have is sitting on the grass in our garden. Sketch pad in one hand and pencil in the other. I’d sit for hours drawing all the plants! I didn’t want to be a gardener as that involves bugs and creepy crawlies, but an artist would have been a wonderful thing to be! I remember sitting in my bedroom one Christmas looking out to the snowy world in front of me. I drew what I saw and at the end I was pleased with the results.

I wasn’t the greatest drawer in the world, but it was something I enjoyed doing. Another area I thought about was becoming a vet. I loved animals and still do, very much so. However, when I realised that would involve blood I quickly changed my mind!

Before I knew it I was finishing school and didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do. My best friend at the time wanted to be in the police force, so I jumped on the bandwagon and toddled off to college to do a National Diploma in Public Services, which I completed. I even got as far as completing an application form, before realising that although the police force would be a great career it wasn’t for me. Not at that time in my life anyway.
Going back to my college days I would sit on the bus stop staring at a big office tower block on the other side of the road. The men and women walking in and out were all dressed smartly and in my opinion they all looked very important. I told myself that one day I would end up working there.
I didn’t have a clue what the office building was used for, what kind of work the people did there or why they were all smartly dressed, but I did end up working up there and it was a complete coincidence.
For those who don’t know when I was 18 I was kicked out of home for loving a man older than me. I’m now married to that man and we have beautiful twin girls together. I was working in a hotel as a chambermaid cleaning up after people and I hated it. The pay wasn’t very good and the job was awful.
I couldn’t pay my way because I didn’t earn a lot, so Twin Daddy footed the bill for everything and I gave what I could. That was until I saw a job advert in a local paper for an insurance company. I filled in the application form, flew through the telephone interview and when I turned up for my interview, can you guess what building it was in?
That’s right, the big, tall office building!
I’m still there now, seven years on and you may be wondering why I am telling you. Well quite simply, because if you put your mind to it and really want something you can achieve it. I know I ended up working there by chance, but since then I have put my mind to a lot of things and have achieved what I wanted to achieve. I still have many more things that I want to achieve and I’m sure that one day I will conquer them all!
I consider myself to be quiet ambitious and without sounding too in love with myself, I am proud of what I have done in my 27 years. Of course I have many regrets, but I try not to dwell on those.
I’ve raised money for charity and continue to do so. I’ve started a blog and hope to continue with it for many years to come and I’m a mum, married and financially stable. I work two days a week and I’m lucky in the fact that when our twins start school I can continue to work two days a week whilst I take on a few other projects. I’d like to spend more time on our blog and one day I’d to have my very own online shop selling handmade and unique items.
I’m happy and if you only do one thing this year, make sure that, that one thing makes you happy.
Life is short. Live is to the best you can.
