Top 5 ways to make a decision

November 12, 2014
I’m quite an impulsive person when it comes to making decisions. I tend to jump in feet first without much thought! Sometimes that can be a great thing and can lead to some wonderful experiences. On the other hand it can be a decision that I later go on to regret.
For example, a rash decision to hold a snake in Marrakech when on holiday with my husband led to this great photo!

What a memory!

The day after I held that snake I was feeling a lot less brave so when I turned to see a man behind me with a snake I jumped a mile and quickly scurried away!
I have many decisions that I regret. When my mum became ill I was a teenager. A selfish, naïve teenager. Instead of staying in and spending time with her, I chose to go out with my friends. That’s a decision I regret very much.
Age has a lot to do with making the right decision in my opinion. When we’re young we tend to be more risky and impulsive. We want to fit in the with the crowd so we often do things without thinking. I really do think that making decisions can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be. That sounds quite simple, but in my experience it tends to be true.
I’m a very positive person. I have a positive outlook on life and try to not to think about negative things. I always try to see the best in every situation and I think that has a profound effect on the way I live my life.
If something goes wrong, for example the heating in our home stopped working yesterday, I try to think of the bigger picture. My husband was instantly in a bad mood about it, whereas I suggested putting on a few extra layers of clothes and doing something else to take his mind off it. I mean it’s not as if it can’t be fixed! It’s just a small, very minor speed bump in the road of life. There are much bigger things in the world to worry about!
Some people find making decisions on their own difficult and so they choose to go down the route of psychic readings. Seeking advice from people from the past can help people make decisions about a lot of things. Sadly I lost my mum almost 10 years ago now and one of the most difficult things I’ve find since becoming a mum is having no-one to turn to for advice.
Being a mum when yours is no longer with you is very tough. I often have questions that I want to her ask her. All sorts of things really. I’m a twin too and I have twins, so I would love to have been able to ask my mum how she coped with twins among other questions of course.
When it comes to making decisions I tend to follow five simple rules:
  •  Think about it! If it’s about buying something – don’t be impulsive! Leave it a day or two to give you time to think and then make a decision.
  • In contrast to my last point it’s also important not to overthink it as this can often cloud your judgement.
  • If it’s a maybe, it’s usually a no! For me if I don’t instantly think Yes then it’s more often than not a no!
  • Weigh up the pros and cons! This one can be quite selfish, but sometimes in life you need to be that way! If it’s not going to benefit you or your life and it’s not something you’re going enjoy doing, then why do it?
  • Seek advice! I don’t necessarily mean professional advice, but sometimes simply asking a friend or family member for their opinion can help provide clarification.

Brave you with the snake! Fab picture.
I am pretty indecisive about most things, sometimes seeking advice does help but it also clouds my view when then considering other opinions! I think I am too laid back!

Really sorry to hear about your Mum, I lost my Dad when I was young and also have regrets about not spending more time with him, but I know really that I did the best I could in a very difficult situation. Sending hugs x

Good advice! But please don't be hard on yourself looking back at when you were a teenager. Teenagers have a completely different mindset – different things matter, small issues are blown out of proportion – and I'm sure your mum understood that. Lots of love, and thanks for hosting #binkylinky

I tend to go by my gut feeling when making a decision but very rarely make an impulsive financial purchase, I have to be coerced into spending money!

I'm awful at making decisions and since having my last baby it's got even worse! I try to trust my gut instinct a lot of the time though and chant the mantra do I want it or need it when shopping! #binkylinky

Great advice! It's brilliant to be a "glass half full" kind of person. You look quite comfortable with that snake around your neck!

Really lovely tips Emily – thanks for sharing. Decisions are something I hate making, but I know I wouldn't hold that snake hehe x Ax

Very true, that rash decisions aren't always good.
I used to buy a lot on amazon on a whim, it was so easy. Now if I see something I like I put it on a list and come back to it a week later.I usually don't buy it…
