Toddler Beds: When is the right time to change?

I often wonder what age I should help our twins make the transition from cot to toddler bed. I guess the first thing we need to ensure before we do anything is that both girls are sleeping through the night in their own cots.
R, is well on her way to achieving this. The only time she will share the bed with us is if she ill. R goes in her cot around 7pm and although she cries out during the night if she has lost her dummy, all I have to do is give her, her dummy and she’ll go back off to sleep. I don’t have to pick up or pat her. I have tried a dummy clip with her at night, but to no avail as she’ll still wake if her dummy falls out. She doesn’t wake every time her dummy falls out, just now again. Last night she woke up twice, but the night before I lost count! I have often thought that it would just be easier to bring her into bed with us, but I don’t want to fall into that habit with her. Yes, it’s a pain getting up just to give her a dummy, but on a positive note she knows that her cot is where she sleeps.
M, is getting better and although she does sleep in the bed with us, the time in which she stays in her cot varies. Sometimes she’ll stay in her cot until 2am and then come into our bed, but other nights she’ll hear us going to bed and will join us at the same time.
I’m thinking they will be closer to 3 when we do decide to move them from their cots to beds. Having looked online I can see that there are a wide variety of single beds available for children. One thing I will do is invest in some bed guards. I wouldn’t want them to fall out! I’ve also seen some great character beds and themed beds can so much fun.
As we have twins, I originally thought about bunk beds, but have since changed my mind. I can just see arguments over sleeps on the top bunk and even though my own twin sister and I had bunk beds when we were children I have a fear that the top bed would collapse onto the bed underneath! Having said that, in our current home bunk beds would be the most appropriate option as we only have 2 bedrooms and you wouldn’t be able to fit two beds in the one room.
We are hoping to buy a house in 2015 which is the same year that our girls will turn 3, so maybe we could incorporate the house move with moving from cots to beds as well. We’ll see!
