Melissa and Doug Slice and Bake Christmas Cookie Set Review
Christmas is fast approaching. With just a few weeks to go until the big day, it’s that time of year when parents start thinking about what to buy their toddlers for Christmas.
Our twins are almost three years old and they’re really into pretend play. Like most children their favourite thing to do is pretend to cook using their play kitchen. They’ll quite happily spend all day putting their toy vegetables into saucepans and pretend to cook them. We’ll incorporate some play dough and make spaghetti and meatballs with them too!
To most children as long a toy doesn’t break whilst playing with it and it’s fun to use they’re happy!
For us parents though we tend to look for a little more than that in the toys we provide our children with. I for one adore wooden toys. I think they look better than plastic toys plus they tend to last longer and endure wear and tear better.
This Melissa and Doug Slice and Bake Christmas Cookie Set is a great example of a wooden toy that I love. We were sent it to review by the wonderful Tracey from The Bear & Miss Rabbit.
The set contains 12 delightful Christmas themed wooden cookies to slice, bake and decorate.
The set includes:
· An oven mitt
· Wooden cookie sheet (baking tray)
· Wooden knife
· Wooden spatula
· Cookie tube for you to store your cookies
As mentioned above our twins are almost three years old which means they’ve just started to understand more about Christmas and Santa.
This set has so many ways in which it can be played with. We play ‘name the picture’ with the decoration parts of the cookies. This is the part that you pop on top of the cookie to decorate them and they all have a wonderful Christmas themed picture on.
The pictures include Santa, a reindeer, a Christmas wreath, a candy cane, a bell, a star, a Christmas tree, holly, two snowflakes, a snowman and a gingerbread man. Each picture is brightly coloured and easily recognisable.
We started off by putting all of the cookie bases into the cookie tube. Each cookie base has Velcro on both sides so that they can stick to the cookie sheet meaning they won’t slide off and the other side can be used to stick your decoration on.
I handed R the wooden play knife whilst M opened the cookie tube and took the cookie bases out. I split them in half so that R and M had half each. They took it in turns using the wooden play knife to cut (separate) their cookies.

This was really easy for our girls to do. They simply slide the knife in between each cookie and wiggled it until the cookies separated. They loved doing this and kept saying that they were big girls because they can bake like mummy! It’s a great role play toy for toddlers.
Once all of the cookies had been separated, R and M placed the cookies onto cookie sheet ready to pop into their play oven. Sadly our play oven is too small for the cookie sheet to go into so we made use of the ‘play hob’ on top of our play kitchen! R and M weren’t too bothered about that though! M wore the oven glove and used the wooden spatula to turn each cookie over so they wouldn’t burn!
We then had lots of fun putting the wooden decorations onto the cookie bases. The decorative, round top pieces have a picture on side and Velcro on the other so that they stick to the cookie bases.
All that was left to do was hand the spatula over to R so that she could remove the cookies from the cookie sheet and pop them onto a plate.
We had great fun playing with this toy which really helps children to use their imaginations and encourage creativity.
The quality of this toy is superb. The wood has a nice shiny finish to it and the cardboard cookie tube is quite durable too.
Would I recommend this toy? Absolutely, yes! It’s provided us with us hours of fun and so far it’s been played with every day and I imagine it will continue to be played with every day for many more days to come!
It’s available for just £13.99 which I think is a great price and it suitable for ages 3+.

Osian has a Melissa and Doug train that's so lovely, I'd never heard of them until Nathan came across them on Amazon!
