Having a baby is a major life event. Life as you know it will never be the same again! A good night’s sleep is a thing of the past as is trying to get a moment alone and getting ready to go out will take you twice as long as usual. You may even struggle to leave your home for the first few weeks, even months and although baby groups are a great place to meet other mums, socialise and ask for advice, trying to gain the confidence to go  can be harder than you ever imagined.
Many new mums, especially first time mums suffer from a lack of confidence after giving birth. It’s completely normal to feel like this, but you can forgot who you are. In addition to being a mum it’s important to remember that you’re also YOU.
Here are some tips on how to get your confidence back after giving birth
  • Have a makeover – Whether you decide to do this yourself or go all out and have a professional help you, a makeover can do you the world of good when it comes getting your confidence back. You could try a new look in terms of makeup and even get a new hair style
  • Exercise – Neen is a health provider for pelvic issues who aim to help mums who may have problems with their bladder or wish to improve their sex life. Their Aquaflex Pelvic Floor Exercise System is designed to automatically isolate and contract pelvic floor muscles. It can be used for up to 20 minutes per day and you can gradually add more weights as strength increases. Improvements can be expected in just 12 weeks and it’s clinically proven – 70% of cases of stress incontinence improved or cured by using Aquaflex
  • Get dressed – After my c-section I spent the first 7-10 days in pyjamas and I was so fed up of feeling a mess! I threw my pyjamas out and dressed properly! I felt so much better for it! It was like getting a sense of normality back! I know it can be easier to stay in pyjamas when you’re home with your baby and to skip the odd shower or two, but having a shower and getting dressed can help make you feel a million times better!
  • Sleep – Try to get as much sleep as you can. Nap when your baby naps and forget about the housework. Being tired and irritable won’t do you any favours and a lack of sleep can have a detrimental effect on your skin which can really knock your confidence
  • Get some fresh air – Getting outdoors, even if it’s just to pop to the local shops can really help you feel better. Fresh air can help lighten your mood and put you in a more positive frame of mind
  • Talk – Whether it’s to your husband, friend or neighbour just having an adult conversation can help make you feel like a person again and not just a nappy changer!
  • Eat well – Eating the right foods and having a healthy diet is another thing you can do to help boost your confidence.

One of the best things that I did which helped me feel confident again was going to a play group. It took me eight months to build up the courage to go, but I’m so glad I went. Those first eight months of our twins lives, I thought I would never be able to leave the house again! The thought of walking into a room full of strangers surrounded by their babies terrified me.

I worried about whether I would be able to get the double buggy into the room and if I couldn’t fit it in how would I manage to open the door by myself with two babies in my arms. Luckily everyone was really friendly and willing to help. I soon realised that the other mums at play group had probably felt the same the first time that they went along.
Last but not least remember to smile and take care of yourself!
