How I met your mother

Written by Twin Mummy.

It was a warm, sunny day and I was working in a local shop.

The shop was on the same street as the house that I lived in with my mum, dad and twin sister.

It was a lovely area to live and grow up in. Friendly people, great shops and lovely parks to ride our bikes around or to just sit and chat with friends.

I was 17 years old.

I hadn’t worked in the shop for very long, but I pretty much knew everyone in the village because it’s where I grew up.

One day, I was stood behind the till staring out of the window and a car drove past. Nothing unusual about that you may think. After all the shop is on a busy main road.

The thing is, why did I look up at that exact moment?

Was it fate? Who knows. Do I even believe in fate?

I believe that some things happen for a reason, but also that something’s happen for no reason at all!

As I looked up, my eyes met with his.

A dark haired, cheeky looking man with his tongue in cheek. Looking right back at me.

I felt a little flutter in my tummy and then he was gone….

…but not for long!

After emptying a few boxes and stacking the various items onto the shelves, I stood up from my crouched position on the floor, turned around and there he was.

Sat in his car, parked on the pavement with his window down.

He smiled and gestured for me to go over to him.

I did.

It was a quick encounter as I could see my boss approaching from a distance.

I can’t remember if he gave me his number or if I gave him mine, but either way a few days later we met up and were sat together in his car.

I knew he was older than me, but I didn’t know how much older than me he was.

It didn’t matter to me though.

We met up a few more times and went for drinks, to the cinema etc and quickly our love blossomed.

But…

It wasn’t all a fairy tale.

When I turned 18, my mum, your Nana, went to heaven.

It was a hard time and one that wasn’t made any easier by some of the forthcoming events.

I can’t remember exactly how long after mum passed away that I told my dad about him, but I already knew exactly how the news would be received.

I was right.

The 27 year age gap was a shock to my dad and he promptly booted me out the door.

Thankfully, our love for one another was strong enough to get us through some pretty tough times.

So, here we are 10 years later.

Married with two beautiful little girls.

Romantic story of how you met. Its a shame about your dad's reaction, and I'm sorry to read about your mum, but it sounds like you two certainly overcame the odds!
