10 ways to help soothe heartburn during pregnancy

June 16, 2014
When I found out that I was pregnant with twins, I thought that I would get every pregnancy symptom going.
Morning sickness, swollen ankles, tiredness etc, but I think I was actually quite lucky.
I had none of those symptoms. Apart from my growing tummy, you would never guess that I was pregnant with twins!
It wasn’t until I was around 25 weeks pregnant that I developed heartburn during pregnancy. I’d never had heartburn before in my life so I didn’t really know much about it or how I could ease the discomfort.
However, I did find that a few things could help to soothe it.
Here are a few tips on how to soothe heartburn.
  1. Take your time when eating. I’m quite a fast eater and found that this would actually make my heartburn worse. By eating my food slowly my heartburn became less
  2. The above tip goes for drinking too. I always have a glass of squash with my meals and found that taking small sips also helped to soothe heartburn
  3. Sleep propped up. I found that my heartburn was worse when lying completely flat. Using a pillow or two to prop your head up slightly can really help
  4. When eating try to sit up straight. If you decide to snack whilst lying down on the sofa for example, you may find your heartburn worsens
  5. Avoid eating food for a few hours before bed
  6. Avoid juice, chocolate and any other foods that you notice trigger your heartburn
  7. Rather than eating three large meals a day, try to eat smaller meals more frequently
  8. Drinking milk can help to ease heartburn
  9. Wear loose, comfortable clothes
  10. See your doctor – Although your pregnant there are some antacids that you can take to ease the discomfort of heartburn
