How To Make A Cheap But Delicious School Lunch
- Create your own convenience items: It’s tempting to go in for the pre-made school lunch options at the grocery store. However, cheese, meat, apple sauce, yogurt, and even trail mix can all be purchased and repurposed. You don’t have to buy into the snack-size products – you can just as easily create your own, store them, and have lunch items ready to go throughout the week.
- Bake your own goods: Boxed crackers, granola bars, and cookies are all fine lunch lunch items. You can purchase them, but you’re not going to be thrilled with the prices. If you’re willing to make your own, you’ll find yourself with tons of recipes that are certain to delight not only your kids!
- Fruits and veggies: Focus on the stuff that’s on sale and/or in season. For the veggies, consider looking up homemade hummus, ranch, or other dipping sauce recipes.
- Storage/freezing: Yogurts and juices can be frozen prior to packing, and they will definitely thaw by lunchtime. Furthermore, you can save on storage by simply purchasing an insulated lunch bag and a couple of reusable ice packs.
- Try a variation on an old idea: Assuming there is no peanut allergy in the case of your child, consider making peanut butter and jelly wraps, rather than the traditional sandwiches. The ingredients are cheap, which means you can purchase in bulk, and create a whole week’s worth of lunches!
- Look into unique alternatives: If you want to get away from sandwiches, why not consider pasta salad? The combination of pasta, veggies, and their favorite dressing will definitely appeal to your child. You can also make enough to last for several days in a row.
- Get creative: Homemade chicken nuggets are not only easy to make, but the ingredients are quite affordable. Another nice element is the fact that thy can be enjoyed both hot and cold.
- Incorporate leftovers: Many of your leftovers can be repurposed into school lunches for the kids. Kabobs are one possibility. You can also make sandwiches, and then cut them with cookie cutters.
