Before I had the twins, I never really had to think about ‘Me Time’. I simply did the various things I loved to do.
All the other things…the things that came under the category of ‘had to do’, were a part of work or making me presentable.
Well, now that the twins are here, I definitely seem to be thinking about getting some time to myself a lot lately.
Hey, I LOVE them to bits, but I’m simply going crazy with all the things that don’t get done on a daily basis. I definitely want to be a hands-on mother and if this means that I have to cook meals from scratch and give each of my little ones quality time with me then so be it!
Apart from loving them and looking after them, I also have to worry about their overall health and development; it’s a full time job and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
However, one thing that bugs me tremendously is that most people seem to think that any time I do anything for myself; I’m getting to be on my own and spending some quality time with myself.
Well, that’s wrong!
Having a bath with the door closed, or painting my nails because they’re looking absolutely horrible now is not a luxury.
As a mum to two gorgeous little girls who seem to know just how to drive me crazy, I do believe that all mums need some time to themselves.
How else will we recharge our batteries and continue to be the loving, caring, busy people that we are?
If you are a busy mum who wonders whether you are doing the right thing by spending time only by yourself, then stop feeling guilty.
In fact, right now, you truly have the most important job in the world; Oprah said so, and that is good enough for me!
Your family depends on you to be sane or else who would do the lion’s share of the housework and provide all the love and nurturing you do?
Therefore, learn to make the distinction between what HAS to be done just so that you look and function like a normal human being and what you WANT to do for yourself.
Getting a haircut is NOT the same as having a luxurious massage.
Making lists for the next day, while lying in bed is NOT the same as reading a book or keeping a track of what Victoria Beckham and her family has been up to lately. Although, I do admit, this is my guilty pleasure!
Painting your toenails while perched on the edge of the bathtub is NOT the same as joining an art class.
I really feel that every person needs some time to themselves just so that they can do something absolutely useless if that’s what makes them happy.
In my case, my ‘me time’ takes different forms depending on what I’m in the mood for at that time, but I do ensure that I treat myself to it every other day.
I’d love to be able to do it every day, but there are only 24 hours and believe me, they spin by incredibly fast when there are twins at home!
Well, mums, I have a whole lot of suggestions for how you can look after yourselves.
• Read a book for yourself only, it’s a great way to relax and depending on the book, you’ll also learn something. Don’t you think it would be nice to read something apart from bed time stories?
• Go ahead, watch your favourite soap or reality show!
• Spend time on Facebook or Twitter and get information on what’s going on in the world.
• Watch your favourite movie lying in bed.
• Play a game of bingo online. It’s a great deal of fun. If you’re not sure where to play then head over to BingoBuddha.co.uk. It will give you information on the best sites and their bonus offers.
• Play a whole lot of mindless games on your computer or cell phone. Try not to get addicted, though.
• Dress up and go out with your friends for a meal or shopping or both.
• Go for a long run, swim or do Yoga or meditation for a while.
As you can see, there are quite a few things you could do for yourself and you certainly shouldn’t feel guilty about taking the time out.
I feel a whole lot better after I take time out and I’m certain everyone around me feels the difference as well!
