What effect is social media having on our children?

February 23, 2021

Social media is a big part of our world. It’s a great way for families all over the world to stay in touch with one another, but at what age should children be given access to social media?

Just to clarify social media to me are platforms such as You Tube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. I read an article not long ago about children who are addicted to their iPads. Children as young as four were seriously addicted to playing games and watching videos on these devices.

Our twins are nearly five years old, and they do play on our phones and the iPad. They’re only given them in the evenings for at most an hour, and I always monitor what they’re watching/accessing. We have a number of apps downloaded such as pony puzzles, Cbeebies and You Tube Kids.

I think the educational apps are great. The Jolly Phonics app is a favourite of mine!

However, one of the things that I find most infuriating is the content of the videos deemed acceptable to be viewed by children of this age.

As I write this post, M is currently sat next to me watching a video of a girl who is wearing a long blonde wig pretending to be Rapunzel. I guess the girl in the video is around 15 years old, and I do wonder whether her parents are aware of the kind of message she’s giving out to young girls with the content of her videos.

She starts out by saying that she’s Rapunzel and that she’s trapped in a tower. She wants to leave the tower, but her mum won’t let her. She returns to her room with a mobile phone and raves about how wonderful the phone is, and she talks about what apps are on it. Firstly, I feel this is kind of pressure on kids to have phones is ridiculous. My girls asked me when they could have their own phones. They’re four!

Anyway, what happens next was the part that most annoyed me.

Another child took the role of the ‘Royal Hairdresser’ and she proceeded to cut the girls long blonde wig until it was pretty short. Rapunzel then gets upset and says that a prince won’t love her now as princes only like girls with long hair.

What kind of message is this giving to our children? More importantly to our girls?

That boys will only like you if you look a certain way and therefore that they should conform to this look in order to ‘get a boy’?

Also, what message is this giving out to boys about the way in which girls look?

I think is so wrong! I’m almost tempted to start making my own videos aimed at children just so that I can break down these barriers!

I think that toys such as the DC Superhero Girls are great and a definite step in the right direction towards showing young girls that they too can be strong and powerful, not just boys. I haven’t seen the TV show so I can’t comment on that though, but I do like the DC Superhero Girl dolls, although I wish they had more realistic body shapes, like the Barbie fashionista dolls who come in curvy, original, tall and petite.

There are so many things which annoy me about the generation that our children are growing up in. I’m already a campaigner for ‘gender free toys’. The fact that boys can’t play with pink toys or that girls can’t play with tractors or cars annoys me, but when these big manufacturers create their adverts which are so directed towards girls playing with dolls and pink toys, against boys playing with cars and blue things, it just makes me feel angry!

I’d love to hear what you think!

It is very hard to raise kids in the age of tech. My oldest at 18 still has a hard time understanding that what you see isn’t always truth. All my kids can be hooked on video games, youtube etc but like you we limit the time on and moniter what they do.
I also agree that boy or girl should be alowed to play with what ever they want. In our house, 80% of the toys are all mixed together in the basement and we will buy what they want not what stores say we should.
    Great post!

I have caught the grem watching some dodgy stuff om Youtube like that and don’t like it. We tend to avoid the ipad really and just let her watch a bit of TV in the morning and at night. I can’t shelter her forever but for now will try. I agree though…not a good message for kids. Thanks for hosting xx

It’s so true – I find it very intimidating just thinking about all of the things that we need to protect our children from. Technology is incredible, but also dangerous and it is important that we educate our children to know how to deal with it. Though that is easier said than done! #ThatFridayLinky

I really hate that social media is influencing our children from such a young age, and yet I know we can do very little to stop it. My 12 year old has an Instagram account but I follow it and he knows what is and what isn’t acceptable. That said, I can’t vet everything he looks at on there, we just have to hope that we instil good values in them and they are able to make their own decisions not based on social media. #thatfridaylinky

That really is bad, and so obviously so. And the 15 year old girl got the impression somewhere that that was right. Not cool. My wife and I decided most of the Disney films we remembered as kids were giving bad messages to girls, and bad messages about women to boys! So we won’t have them on. But it’s so difficult to keep track, and it’s tough to deny your kids something that’s becoming a ‘basic’ good in society now for long. I’ll be keeping an eye out for this stuff though. #thatFridayLinky

For situations like this, being not very techno savvy is an advantage! However, I am quite lucky that all my son wants to watch on my tablet is you tube star wars lego reviews! Social media on the whole, has given me a great deal of support but I absolutely hate seeing my teenage nieces on there. Social media has taken over and I just want to hide away sometimes where there is no internet signal!

This is not a situation we have had to deal with yet as our little one is 7 months however I am not keen on our little girl having her own smartphone until she is a teenager. This is mostly due to the fact that I worry that her use of it would be hard to control and it may cause problems with her being hard to settle at night after staring at the screen etc. I appreciate that tablets etc are great for some apps but I would approach it in a similar way as you guys and limit use.

I allowed my little man into tech at age 5/6 and I wished I waited longer. Its all consuming though, once they start online they dont want to get off. We’ve had many a ‘discusssion’ about screen time. Gone are the days of playing outside. We are in an era of instant gratification and I feel it affects their developing minds too much. Its a very difficult balance, now that I’ve opened Pandora’s box.

I keep an eye on what he does online. I too love the jolly phonics app too but it reminds him of school, ‘who wants to learn at home!,’ he says
So its Minecraft (where he learns lots of stuff but doesn’t realise he is) and watching other people play games on YouTube. (bit mad but..ya know. I watch others play soccer I suppose).

We let Alfie use our phone and tablet and have seen him watching some odd stuff, we try to monitor it a bit more closely now as I’ve no idea how he finds these things on you tube. Interesting post and thanks for hosting #ThatFridayLinky

My 2.5yo used to watch a lot of youtube but she found some weird videos so now she watches a bit of Peppa Pig (wahhhh!) or Ben & Holly if she’s a good girl. ox

I think it’s all about balance isn’t it… we let our toddler watch nursery rhyme videos and cartoons on YouTube and cbeebies programmes on catch up etc but we choose the episodes, we maintain the control over what is played and the amount of time it is watched as well…. not to be dictatorial but just to ensure young eyes and minds are protected. Kids don’t need their own gadgets or phones. They can borrow ours to a degree as they get older but I will always monitor what they watch and I’ve already said that there is no way they will own their own ipad, phone or social media accounts until well into teenage hood. Kids are vulnerable enough as it is! Please set up your own videos!lol! That would be a great way to counteract the likes of Rapunzel! #thatfridaylinky

All I know that too much IPAD is currently one of my many parenting fails.

There are a lot- but this makes the list.

What a great topic! I agree with you it is scary how much the social media and ‘being online’ is taking over the childhood of the newer generations. I dont know when I think it would be okay for Elliot to use the social media. He is only still a baby so thankfully I still have time to figure that out. Obviously you can’t refuse kids today to be online, it’s a part of life now, just as much as I think a lot of adults would be terriefied if they had to be without their phones! When that is said it has to be age appropriate! What you described with that video on YouTube would anger me too! A 5 year old won’t know that this girl might be trying to ‘sell’ an item, they won’t be able to destinquish that what is said is not the be all and end all truth. I think a lot about what is age appropriate and what I want to expose my child to, we’ve only just started introducing TV to Elliot, he gets to watch ‘in the night garden’ and only because I can see that he actually enjoys and engages with it, he isn’t just zombied in front of the screen. I think the maximum 1 hour a day is a good rule, sounds like ‘kids YouTube’ is a dangerous app though, not enough legislation in terms of what is allowed, I think because our generations don’t really understand the massive draw of YouTube on young kids we forget that this area needs just as much control as kids TV – for instance there is far to little control with hidden advertisment/ product placement with Vloggers, and some of those teen Vloggers have giant followings of kids!
As for the other issue! I too hate how everything is so divided in girl/boy aimed. Toys should be gender neutral! I want Elliot to play with whatever he wants and if he wants a doll, dollhouse or enjoys cooking then I would like to be able to meet his wishes without having to fill the house with pink stuff. Who has a pink kitchen anyway?! I hope there will come a time in the future where toys are for all kids and not catering to old fashioned gender stereotypes.?

we’re big fans of the DC Superhero girls here. It’s exhausting how close attention needs to be paid to some of the horrific marketing and stereotypes that seem to be everywhere #thatfridaylinky

It’s a horrible thought of what they watch when we aren’t around! Isn’t frozen about not needing a man? Then brave had a strong female lead. I love how women are being brought to the forefront and equal to men.
Just a shame there are a few bits out there letting the team down! #thatfridaylinky

My almost four year old does love the iPad. But I always monitor what’s he’s watching or playing. It’s usually the Engineering Family or Ryan’s Toy Review – or random egg opening videos. He loves music too so he loves watching music videos – these I keep an eye on as these days some are risqué!
We have an old iPhone 4 with Spotify that he uses to play his favourite songs but that’s all. Obviously the iPad has educational apps aswell which I too think are great.
They are growing up in a world that is so advanced and it’s a given that computers and tablets will be a part of that world. It seems silly to not let them have a head start.
Gender free toys is also something I’m keen to encourage. My little one loves trolls from the film and it annoyed me so much that someone he was playing with the other day said ‘that’s a girls toy’. I quickly told her that just because he’s a boy it doesn’t mean he can’t enjoy it. He loves my old Barbie too!!
Great post with a food for thought. #thatfridaylinky

Your children are a few years older than mine so my girls are in a blissful bubble of not knowing about all these things. The closest the eldest has got is mimicking mummy and daddy as she taps away on the laptop from time to time! #ThatFridayLinky

It is becoming harder and harder to shield our children from gender stereotyping. I recently wrote a blog about gender stereotype toys and how kitchens are never in the boys section and craft stuff is hardly in the boys isles. My 3 year old has an ipad of his own but like you he is only allowed it at certain times. Sorry for late comment! Crazy week! #thatfridaylinky

That’s the problem isn’t it mate – that for all the good apps and educational videos out there there’s tons of utter rubbish that’s either negatively stereotyping or stuff like watching other kids unwrap a Kinder Egg…like seriously! Our eldest loves the CBeebies app and also has a learning clock and phonics game but then suddenly I can hear a grown man dressed as Spider-Man sat on a toilet. 😂
