Digitally Distracted Parents

This is a subject that sadly, far too many parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins etc can relate to. In this blog post, I’m going to focus on parents. When you think back to your childhood, what do you remember? Specifically, what do you remember about the time you spent with your parents? Were they present? Were they engaged in conversation or play? For many people, I hope, the answer to those two questions will be yes. Looking at my own childhood, I fondly remember playing games with my parents. Perhaps a board game or hide and seek for… [Read More]

Life through a screen

Have you ever been to a show or concert and ever counted how many people are watching it through their mobile phone screens? I have, and it’s a lot. Take Bonfire night for example. My husband and I took our children along to the local fire stations firework display. We does this every year, and every year we really enjoy it. As the time to light the bonfire gets nearer more and more people start to gather in the crowds, and then as soon as the bonfire is lit, out come the mobile phones. It’s the same when the fireworks… [Read More]

What age should children get a mobile phone?

I was 11 years old when my parents bought my sister and I our first mobile phones. After months of nagging and making promises to keep our bedroom tidy, our parents finally gave in and agreed. The Motorola D160 wasn’t the best looking mobile phone, but back then it was one of the ‘must have’ phones. Just look at the size on the screen! Imagine having a screen that size now! It was pretty basic, with it’s green LED backlight and one game included, namely snake, but for my sister and I, it was the best thing since sliced bread! Of… [Read More]

The childhood of our past

How old are your children? What do they do in their spare time? Our girls are five years old and I’m pleased to say the majority of their time is spent playing games and being creative. I’ve often read that modern parents are too focused on keeping their children busy and worrying about them getting bored, so much so that we don’t allow time to get bored. Of course boredom can be a great thing as it means children can invent new games and come up with their own ways of entertaining themselves. All of this being great for their… [Read More]

How To Switch Off When Tech Takes Over: A Guide For Parents

Parenting in this day and age is very different to how it used to be. Technology is everywhere we look, and it can be tough to raise kids to appreciate the benefits of newfangled gadgets without becoming reliant on them. As parents, we often moan that kids spend too much time in front of the TV or on their phones, but there are amazing benefits to enjoy. It’s about finding a balance and taking control. If you’re a parent, and you’re worried about your kids growing up in the age of online learning, social media, and Snapchatting, here are some… [Read More]

Stop blaming technology! Blame the Parents!

Kids playing in woods

I see so many news articles, blog posts, vlogs and social media statuses about how children of today are becoming obsessed with technology. Children are spending more and more time locked away in their bedrooms alone whilst they surf the internet, spend time on social media and chat with their friends online. Family meal times and conversations are in decline as children and their parents would rather sit and stare at their phones whilst eating instead of making conversation about their day or life in general. What’s happening to us? So many parents complain about the amount of time their… [Read More]

What effect is social media having on our children?

Child on iPad

Social media is a big part of our world. It’s a great way for families all over the world to stay in touch with one another, but at what age should children be given access to social media? Just to clarify social media to me are platforms such as You Tube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. I read an article not long ago about children who are addicted to their iPads. Children as young as four were seriously addicted to playing games and watching videos on these devices. Our twins are nearly five years old, and they do play on our phones… [Read More]

Choosing Technology for Your Child this Holiday Season

As the holiday season approaches, you might be thinking about adding some needed electronics for your kids to your holiday shopping list. Some things are simply necessities in today’s technology-based society–and those items that aren’t needed for school, communication, or other purposes also have their place on your child’s must-have list. The good news is, holiday sales and promotions are also the perfect time to purchase those items. Choosing a Tablet For younger children, a tablet is a great way to provide a distraction on road trips, allow them to watch their own shows or videos without sharing with the… [Read More]

How will your children remember their childhood?

Childhood is a funny thing isn’t it. I mean you have no responsibilities, you don’t have to worry about paying bills or what to cook for tea, plus you’ve got your mum and dad to do pretty much everything for you. I often wonder what it’d be like to be a child growing up in today’s world as I believe it’s so very different to the world that I grew up in.   My memories of childhood mainly consist of playing in the garden with my sister, going out with my friends to the park or their houses and asking… [Read More]

Toddlers and Technology

Our girls are three and a half years old. They started nursery a few weeks ago and they’re growing up so quickly. The scary thing is that the world they’re growing up in is so different to the world that I grew up in. My sister and I would spend our spare time outdoors playing with our friends. We’d either go over their house or to the local park, or simply just wander around. At home my sister and I shared one pretty big desktop computer. The internet connection was dial-up so it was a pretty poor connection and you… [Read More]
