We're all going on a summer holiday!
Oh my god!
Yes, it is true! We are all going on holiday!
Twin Daddy, our twins, Twin Daddy’s 3 children and Twin Daddy’s mum, who has very generously paid for everything.
I’m excited but also nervous. Twin Daddy and I did book a holiday last year to Haven, but we ended up cancelling it because the twins were teething really bad and just weren’t settled. Well, that is what we keep telling ourselves, but I also think Twin Daddy and I were a little (ok a lot!) nervous of going on holiday with the twins.
At 16 months of age, I think now is as good a time as any to be brave and just go for it!
We are off to Spain next month so be prepared for my pre-holiday check list post and my post holiday post!
I’m a little concerned about our girls’ routine because it’s very good and I hope going on holiday won’t alter that when we return.
I’m one of those people, who in life has to super organised! I plan my week out so I know exactly what I’m doing and when I’m doing it. The thought of having no routine on holiday makes me feel a little uneasy.
At present our routine goes like this:
5-6am: Wake up
6-6:30am: Breakfast
730-8am: Bath
9-930am: Snack
12pm: Lunch
1230pm: Nap
2pm: Wake from Nap and have a snack
4pm: Tea
630pm: Bottle
7pm: Bed
There are a few things that concern me.
Our flight is around 3pm. This means we will leave home around 12pm, so we will give the girls lunch a little earlier and then they can sleep in the car on the way to the airport. This is where concern number 1 comes in! It only takes 20 minutes for us to get to the airport, so when we get there and put the girls in the pushchair, do we lay them flat and hope they’ll go back to sleep for at least another hour? I hope they will because no-one wants cranky babies on a plane!
Concern number 2: Our girls have tea at 4pm. Our flight, as mentioned above is around 3pm, so we will have to give the girls something to eat on the plane. Thing is, we give them a hot meal at home, so I wonder how well they’ll take to a sandwich.
Concern number 3: How do we keep the twins from wriggling off our laps during take off?
Concern number 4: How do we entertain them on a 2 hour plane journey? Are they allowed to wander up and down the aisles? I have bought two magnetic activity books for them and I plan on bringing lots of snacks.
These may all seem like trivial things to worry about, but to a first time mummy going on a first time holiday abroad with toddlers, these are huge worries for me and that’s not to mention the worries I have about being abroad!
Oh, people say I’m laid back in life but I’m starting to wonder whether they’re just humouring me!

We took Squeaky abroad for the first time at a similar age, but there's only one of her, so I'm not sure quite how much help I can be, but I'll try.
As far as the staying on your lap during take off – the cabin crew will give you extenders for your seat belts, they loop onto your belt, and then you fasten the belt around their laps. You can adjust them as needed, so they shouldn't be able to escape. It's actually far harder next year when they have to have their own seat, but are smaller than the lap belt even at its tightest setting.
Yes, they can potter up & down the aisle a bit, between drinks service, food service & duty free. They may not want to, and there's not really much to see, but they can move around a bit. Snacks are a really good idea, we took loads. The Tomy Aquadoodle travel sets are good too if your little ones like to draw, they only need water in the pens & can't make a mess. If you can see out of the window, that will help pass the time, looking through the magazine, it's not as hard as it sounds.
They will love it, two hours passes quite quickly, but I wouldn't want to fly any further for a few years yet. Good luck, and happy holidays!
