Tips to Help Bloggers Overcome Writers Block
I’ve been blogging for almost five years and up until now I’ve been fairly lucky in terms of thinking of things to write about. I’ve never suffered from writers block. I always manage to think up things to write about. Sometimes it might just come to me when I’m drifting off to sleep, walking to work or even whilst I’m mid-conversation with someone.
When I get an idea I tend to jot it down on the notepad of my phone as soon as possible so that I don’t forget it. I have a terrible memory!
Aside from writing reviews and receiving paid content, which are good fillers for the days I perhaps haven’t got around to writing something more natural, I often wonder how it’s possible for me to continue to write posts every day, but if you take a closer look at my blog, you’ll see that I don’t tend to publish a post on a Saturday, and Sunday’s are usually a simple ‘My Sunday Photo’ post which literally takes minutes to put together.
I’ll always have content on a Friday as that’s the day that I host my linky, That Friday Linky, with my husband, Nigel, who blogs at DIY Daddy. So in truth, I really only need to write four posts a week for me to be able to have content Monday-Friday.
As I mentioned above I haven’t suffered from writers block yet, but now and again I’ve felt as though I’ve needed some inspiration when it comes to topics to write about that people will find engaging.
I have a number of different ways that I look for inspiration so I thought I’d share them with you.
Read the news
I don’t just mean turn your TV on or pick up a newspaper. What I’m talking about is going to the ‘News’ section of Google and typing in a few key words relevant to your blog. For me this would be things like parenting, parents, twins, school, education etc. For someone like my husband it can also include these topics, but also things like DIY and interiors etc as he also covers those topics on his blog.
By searching for these keywords, you can find articles that are both topical and relevant to your blog. I find that by writing about something topical, something that’s happening now, I can get good exposure and interaction.

Write what you think and draw upon your life experiences
This one is pretty straight forward, but it’s funny how a single thought can be transformed into a blog post. On a recent run I realised how much I’d actually learnt over the course of the past four weeks. I thought to myself that if I’d managed to learn this much about something I love, why not share it with others who also enjoy running? It might help someone else, possibly give them some motivation and it’ll also be a great way for me to document what I’ve learnt in case I ever need to come back to it in the future.
Another thing I like to do is to draw upon my own life experiences. This doesn’t mean that you have to get all deep and meaningful, unless of course you want to! I was recently searching through my wardrobe for some old running medals when I came across some other items from my past that brought back lots of fun memories. As such I was inspired to write this post all about my precious things.
If you go out for the day with the kids to a farm or maybe a night out with the girls, you could write a review about the place you visited. People who are local to you will really enjoy reading these types of posts.
Read parenting forums
Netmums is a good one for this! There’s always someone moaning about something or a group of people discussing the latest trend or ‘hack’ when it comes to being a parent. I find these forums a great source of inspiration and ideas!
If parenting isn’t your niche, try searching online for some forums that do cover your niche. You never know, you may find the idea for your next ‘most read’ post!
If all else fails…
If all else fails and you really can’t think of anything to write about, but don’t want to leave your blog empty for the day, then a simple ‘a day in the life of a….’ post will do. Check out my, ‘A day in the life of a blogger‘ post. You can be pretty flexible with these types of posts and apply them to almost anything. ‘A day in life of (insert job title here)’ or ‘A day in the life of a busy working mum’ etc.
You may even want to write a post about all of the things you’ve been up to in a week or in a month etc. Maybe you’ve discovered a new favourite product, magazine or book? Why note share them with your readers?
These are just a few ideas that I use to help me write my blog posts. I’d love to hear your thoughts and find out where you get inspiration from or maybe you’ve had writers block? If so, how did you get over it?
Thanks for reading!

Great tips. I try to get something out every day, but on days when it feels like I’m cluching at straws I just give up. I’d rather not post then post drivel.

Some great tips here. I seem to have agreed to a lot of book reviews at the moment which is filling up my blog. Must be a bit more selective then I can get round to some more varied types of blog posts. I really only post once a week (but I have two blogs so that’s two posts) with more on weeks I have some news (or get inspired – which doesn’t happen often).

Excellent advice! I do suffer from writer’s block but I end up just letting go and writing about whatever is in the way of a good post, and that turns into a post! #fridaylinky

Having a list of ideas written down can be helpful. I’ve done that before, but I typically tend to just keep them in my head right now.

Fantastic tips! I used to blog every day of the working week, but found this too hard to keep up with while working full time. So a while ago I decided to blog 3-4 times a week, which I’ve found much more manageable and allows me to still enjoy putting blog posts together 🙂 #ThatFridayLinky

I have a list of topics that I want to cover, as I come up with an idea I add it to the list, or if it feels right I will write about it straight away. I only plan to post 2-3 times a week, I go back to work soon and don’t want to feel burned out by the weekends! #ThatFridayLinky

Good advice. I tend to only post when I have something to say. That could be once a week or five times a week, but I try not to force it just hope that something will come to me! #thatfridaylinky

Great advice, bookmarked for later! I’ve always been sporadic with my blogging, sometimes I just don’t seem to think of any ideas, other times they all come flooding in. I should probably try for a bit more routine, like you have. Thanks for sharing these ideas!

I always have a notebook handy for jotting down potential ideas. They don’t always make it, but I find it a good way to keep the mind working. It always amazes me that you and Nige are able to get something new out everyday. I don’t know how you do it. #thatfridaylinky
