My Precious Things

March 29, 2017

It’s funny how certain things can bring back fond memories of a specific time in your life. A few days ago I was looking through some old boxes that I’ve yet to unpack since moving into our home earlier this year, and I came across a ‘treasure trove’ of ‘precious things’ from my past.

I’d initially been searching for some old running medals. Since I started running again last year, I was keen to keep all of my running medals and bibs together in a box. Mainly so that my girls can see them and cherish them, but also to keep me motivated in adding more medals to my collection! Anyway I found the medals, along with my running bibs, but I also came across some other items.

One of those items was a set of wooden Russian dolls. They were a bit dusty and damp from being kept in the box, but they were still just as colourful as the day that I’d bought them. They reminded me of my mum because she’d had a similar set of Russian dolls. I remembered playing with them when I was little. To be honest it was the main reason that I’d bought myself a set!

I was on holiday in Rome with my husband when those cute little dolls caught my eye. As well being a reminder of my husband and I’s first trip to Rome, those Russian dolls are also a reminder of my mum and the feeling of nostalgia that they bring me is bitter sweet as mum is no longer here.

It was also lovely to watch my own children playing with the Russian dolls. They were fascinated with them! The idea that each one opened up to reveal another identical, yet smaller doll was intriguing to them!

I also came across a small, glittery teddy bear. I know it was my mums, but I can’t remember if I’d bought it for her or if she already owned it. I’m pretty sure I bought it for her though. It’s in perfect condition as it had been kept in a jewellery box inside the cardboard box. I now keep her in my current jewellery box and every time I open it up to put on my jewellery first thing each morning, I’m instantly reminded of mum. Of course, my girls have their own this teddy for themselves though, so if it ever goes missing I’ll have a pretty good idea of where to find it!

I also came across two old cameras. They don’t work anymore, but they make great ‘toys’ for our girls! One is a handheld video recorder. It’s pretty small and the screen pops out on it which M thinks is amazing! The other is an old digital camera. Now and again I can hear the girls saying ‘Let’s take a selfie!’ Although these cameras aren’t precious to me, it was a fun find for the girls!

I also found a pair of sunglasses that belonged to my mum, as well as one of her necklaces that I’d worn on my wedding day. I already have some of her rings in my jewellery box which I cherish too.

Do you have any belongings that are precious to you? I’d love to hear what they are and why they’re precious to you.
