The Cat in the Hat Show Review at the New Theatre, Cardiff

Our twins, who are almost four years old, love it. I was curious to see how well it would transfer over to a stage show.

Showing in the New Theatre, Cardiff from today until Sunday, 21st February, a few tickets are still available if you’re at a loose end this weekend.

When we walked into the theatre to take our seats, the first thing we saw was a colourful house on the stage. As the lights went down we saw two figures appear in the window.

Sally and her brother have been left at home on their own and like most kids, they’re bored!

They entertain each other by playing games such as throwing a ball and playing tennis, whilst their fish looks on from her goldfish bowl. The fish was a hand puppet played a lady, who played the part really well.

Before long there was a loud bump noise that made Sally and her brother jump. 

The front door begins to open and we see a furry tail wiggling up and down followed by a fluffy foot and a tall red and white stripey hat.

The Cat in the Hat has arrived and he’s sure to try his best to show Sally and her brother how to have fun.

Everyone played their parts really well and the costumes were fantastic.

The Cat in the Hat soon turns a boring rainy day into a fun packed time. He’s pretty mischievous to be honest and before long we’re introduced to Thing 1 and Thing 2.

The show started to get a bit more interactive at this point as bubbles rained down from the sides of the room and beach balls along with giant red balls were thrown into the audience for them to take part in the fun and games too!

We were sat in the upper circle and were surprised to see Thing 1 appear from a side door. He walked amongst the audience and gave some of the kids a high five too!

I mentioned earlier that Sally and her brother have a pet fish. Now this pet fish is rather sensible and throughout the fun and games the fish tries to talk Sally and her brother into making the Cat in the Hat leave. Soon they realise that’s probably a good idea as he, along with Thing 1 and Thing 2 had made quite a mess and with their mother due home soon, they wouldn’t have much time left to tidy up.

Fortunately the Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2 helped to tidy up and by the time Sally and her brothers mum arrived home, all was calm and tidy again.

Overall, this was an enjoyable show. It was only around 45 minutes long, but we thought it was great!
