Spooky Halloween Cakes

October 28, 2015
This year is the first year that I’ve made Halloween cakes. It’s not something I’d normally do, but since our girls started school I’ve joined the team of parents that help out with events and raising funds for the school. That meant that I’ve offered my help with the Halloween party and I said I’d make some spooky cakes.

I did a trial run beforehand to make sure they turned out ok and I’m pleased to say that they did so I thought I’d share them here with you!

You will need
For the cakes
175g caster sugar
175g sifted self-raising flour
175g butter (room temperature)
3 medium eggs
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon baking powder
For the buttercream icing
175g butter (room temperature)
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
350g sifted icing sugar
1-2 drops of green food colouring
2-3 tablespoons of milk
To decorate
ASDA Halloween cake decorations
Chocolate pumpkins
How to
  • Pre-heat the oven to 180 Celsius
  • Mix all the cake ingredients together in a bowl and then spoon the mixture into your cupcake cases
  • Cook for 20-25 minutes
  • Leave to cool and then decorate with the buttercream
Buttercream
Mix the icing sugar and butter together. Add the milk and then stir until smooth and creamy. Once the buttercream is at your desired texture add 1-2 drops of the green food colouring. For a darker green, add a few more drops.
To decorate sprinkle with cake decorations!
Verdict
Our twins, R and M, loved helping me to make these cakes. Their favourite part though is definitely decorating them and eating them!

These look fantastic! I love baking and I'm currently obsessed with baking vids on You Tube (Cupcake Jenma is brill). I also baked with my son for the first time last week – which was very fun if messy! (He's two) Well done on the cakes and thanks for sharing x
