My First Fundraising Event: An Update

As many people know I’ll be running the London Marathon next year for WellChild, the national charity for sick children. As part of accepting a charity place with WellChild I have a fundraising target of £1,600. I made the first donation of £100 to confirm my place, and I have since raised a good amount already through online donations, selling second hand goods, and from making crafts and selling them.

However, I always knew that the biggest earner would be from hosting events. That’s why, with a pretty small turnaround time, I arranged my first event. A charity family magic show during half term week.

This was quite a spontaneous decision after seeing a local children’s magician advertise an offer on Facebook. After getting in touch and confirming his availability, I managed to book a local church hall for the event.

Tesco very kindly donated some prizes for a raffle, and the Co-Op donated some food and drink. Next all I needed to do was get the word out!

I made up some leaflets, printed them out and then handed them out everywhere I could think of! I stood outside local schools handing them out, asked shops and supermarkets to put the leaflets up on their community boards, visited local playgroups to hand them out, and of course promoted it in every Facebook group I could find!

Slowly, but surely people started getting in touch asking to buy tickets. I think I drove my husband insane in the run up to the show! Our girls were very excited as well, and asked if they could help on the food and drink stall!

On the day of the event, my phone was going off every other minute with last minute ticket sales! Everyone who bought tickets turned up, and we even had people turn up on the door to buy tickets too.

Overall, 46 children attended the magic show. We raised money through ticket sales, raffle ticket sales and from selling food and drink.

After expenses, we managed to raise a grand total of £192.68 for WellChild! This takes my total fundraising amount up to £455.18. Only another £1,144.82 to go!

I have a number of other events lined up such as supermarket bucket collections, coffee mornings and hopefully a summer garden party for children. I’d also like to host a children’s Christmas party. I did this once before for a different charity and managed to raise a good amount, so I’m hopeful again this year.

I’ve also placed some charity tins in local businesses. I have my fingers crossed that not only will I meet my fundraising target, but I’ll also exceed it!

  2. It’s so hard to raise money sometime’s but events are a great way. My aunt raises money on a regular basis for a charity and she ask’s her local pub if they would host quiz nights and also has a raffle, because everyone loves a raffle.
