Morrisons Challenge
We were recently sent £80.00 worth of vouchers to spend in-store at Morrisons last Bank Holiday weekend.
The theme was about Bank Holiday family meals. Morrisions have recently announced that they have made some changes to their pricing and brand.
Morrisons said:
“There’s lots of savings in store so for your money you should be able to buy a lot more.”
“…we’ve cut the prices on over a thousand of your favourite products. Not temporary reductions or supermarket smoke and mirrors, these are new every day low prices on the things you buy every week. So you’ll notice the difference with every shop.”
We usually do our weekly food shop at ASDA and top up on a few bits and pieces in Morrisons throughout week as it’s just around the corner from where we live.
We spend £120 a week in ASDA, so both my Husband and I were keen to see if we could save money by shopping at Morrisons.
We headed to Morrisons on Saturday, 3rd May armed with our vouchers.
Outside Morrisons and everywhere inside were lots of yellow markers which stated ‘I’m cheaper’ alongside the products that they have reduced the prices of.
Morrisons also said:
“There’s lots of savings in store so for your money you should be able to buy a lot more.”
One of the things I like about Morrisons is that they have a salad bar, so my Husband and I bought ourselves a medium sized box each for our lunch.
We started in the fruit aisle and I was impressed when I picked up a bag of salad for 75p and a 250g pack of Strawberries for 99p.
As we made our way around the shop my Husband and I found ourselves comparing the prices instore to those of ASDA.
We noticed that with a couple of our main buys, Morrisons was actually more expensive:
Potato Smiles – ASDA £1.00 – Morrisons £1.68
Dairylea Dunkers – ASDA £1.00 – Morrisons £1.12
Grapes – ASDA £1.50 – Morrisons £2.00
Braces Bread – ASDA £1.00 – Morrisons £1.35
Pampers Nappies – ASDA (64 nappies) £11.00 – Morrisons (48 nappies) £11.22
Heinz Custard Pots – ASDA (4 pack £1.50) – Morrisons (4 pack) £1.75
I was disappointed to see that Morrisons don’t sell the big boxes of pampers pull-up nappies, only small packs.
Some of things I did notice with Morrisons was that the dates on chilled food were better than those in ASDA. I wonder if this has something to do with how much stock Morrisons buys compared to ASDA. The reason I think this is because quite a lot of the shelves in Morrisons were empty or had very little of each item available.
Having said that I found the range of ready meals available in Morrisons more appealing than that of those in ASDA and Morrisons chicken dinner oven meal definitely tastes better than the ASDA one!
When it comes to childrens meals, ASDA do have a bigger, better selection.
As part of the Morrisons challenge we were asked to share a recipe with you that we cooked using products bought in-store.
I decided to cook chicken skewers with new potatoes and salad, followed by home made strawberry cheesecake.
Cost per serving of the skewers £4.52.
Cost per serving of the strawberry cheesecakes £2.64
Chicken Skewers
Ingredients
New baby potatoes
500g skinless chicken fillets
Caesar dressing
Garlic ciabatta
40g unsalted butter
100g smoked bacon
1 lettuce
1 lemon
Method
- Add your new potatoes to a saucepan full of boiling water and simmer until cooked
- Coat chicken in the caesar dressing in a sealable plastic bag for a minimum of one hour.
- Thread the chicken onto skewers
- Cook on a medium-hot grill or barbecue for 15-20 minutes. Make sure you turn the skewers regulary until cooked through. Set aside once cooked
- Butter your garlic ciabatta and toast under the grill for 1-2 minutes on both sides. At the same time, grill the bacon for 5-10 minutes and then cut into strips
- Place the skewers on your plates with the potatoes. Then scatter the bacon over the lettuce and serve with a wedge of lemon
Strawberry Cheesecake
Ingredients
85g ginger biscuits
200g light soft cheese
200g Greek yogurt
4 tbsp caster sugar
A few drops of vanilla extract
2 tbsp strawberry jam
100g strawberries
Method
- Put the biscuits in a plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin until they’re in crumbs. Divide between 4 glasses
- Beat the cheese, yogurt, sugar and vanilla together until smooth
- Spoon over the crumbs and chill until ready to eat
- Stir the jam until loose, then stir in the strawberries and add to the cheesecakes
Overall we spent £143.96 and we came away with less food for our money compared to ASDA.
When we come back from our ASDA food shop, I always struggle to shut the boot of my car, but it was easy to shut at Morrisons!
Unfortunately, we didn’t save money shopping at Morrisons, so we’ll be sticking with ASDA!
For the purpose of this post we were sent £80 worth of vouchers from Morrisons.

Mummy loved being a #MorrisonsMum and the shopping too! She found some things were cheaper, but others weren't. I liked the cafe 😉 x

Love the look of those cheesecakes! I can't shop in Asda it stresses me out too much lol I think it might just be our local one though
