Is it irresponsible to take your child to play group when they're ill?

October 7, 2013

Undoubtedly, the first time you ever take your baby to a mum and baby group the chances of them catching a cold are probably quite high. I remember the first time I took the girls to baby, a few days later they had both caught colds and from then on every other month they would have runny noses or coughs or both.

It didn’t stop me from going to baby group, but I always made sure I was extra careful about ensuring they didn’t put any toys in their mouths

I was wondering what your views were when it comes to going to baby group when your child is ill. For example, if our girls have runny noses and/or coughs I would most likely still take them to baby group. After all if your child goes to nursery with a cold they won’t be turned away so it’s kind of them same thing, right? Is this irresponsible of me?

Having said this, I also know that if I was at baby group and I saw a child with a runny nose, I would try my best to avoid contact and would try to keep R and M away from said child.

Obviously, when it comes to stomach bugs and tonsillitus I would never dream of taking them to baby group, but when it comes to a cold, what do you think? Would you still take your child?

I’d love to know what you think.

I would still take them if they had a cold or a bit of a snivel. If you stayed at home every time your child was a little bit ill you'd never go out. plus is good for them to build an immunity!

Yeah, that's true. A cold or sniffly nose, I'd still take them, but some people do look at me as though I should have stayed home!

I would still take them if they had a cold….Not if they had a temperature, sickness or anything else though!

Me too. It's funny though if another child has a runny nose at play group, I will try to keep a distance!
