How to modernise your home

When my husband and I moved into our new home earlier this year, we soon realised that it was in need of some modernisation. It was lovely the way it was, but we felt it just needed a bit of TLC. We live in a dorma-bungalow, which means that the loft has been converted to give us some extra space. Upstairs we have two bedrooms and an en-suite. Downstairs we have a play room, bedroom, lounge, kitchen, bathroom and a conservatory. We haven’t got a big budget so we knew we needed to find some cost effective ways to bring our new home into the 21st century.

1. The first thing we wanted to do was make sure that our home was safe and secure. With this in mind we thought about getting some CCTV. You can pick up a simple wi-fi or bluetooth CCTV system pretty cheaply nowadays. The one that we have also has an app which means when we’re away from I can check up on our home no matter where in the world we are.

2. The second thing we did was to get a swing gate system. The existing gate to the back of the property was really old and with the heavy rain and wind it eventually blew off. My husband recommended that we used a gate that was good quality so that it would last a long time. Barrier Components is a good place to look.

3. Security Spot lights were next on the list. I’m talking about the ones that light up when motion is detected. We have one of these in our front drive and one toward the back.

4. The last thing we did was change the front door. The one that was already in place was wooden with two glass panes in so not ideal when you have young children, plus the locks were really stiff which made it difficult to open them. We upgraded to a UPVC front door because it’s more secure, maintenance free and it looks a lot better too.
