How to Have a Happy Family Life

November 2, 2016

Maintaining a happy family can be a tricky challenge when you’re trying to juggle work, finances the kids, your partner and anything else life throws at you! So what can you do to ensure domestic harmony in your home?

Balance Your Work and Home Life

Try not to consistently spend too much time in the office. Children will be able to sense if you have brought work-stress home with you on an evening so if possible, take 10 minutes to yourself to relax before spending time with the kids.

Studies show that children benefit from eating their meals at the dinner table – they’re more likely to have higher self-esteem, a larger vocabulary and better manners, as well as having fewer behavioural problems. This time is valuable for catching up with your family so make time for this ritual, even if it’s only a couple of times a week.

Spend Quality Time Together

Organise regular days where the family can spend time together. This could be a mixture of day trips, activities or just a lazy day on the sofa. Take this opportunity to tell stories about your family history and show them old photographs. It will help keep them grounded and have a stronger sense of identity as they will see the bigger picture outside of their own life.

It’s important that you spend quality time with your partner away from the kids, too. Organise a date night once a month, but be flexible because there’s no point in just going through the motions. Do something that you really enjoy together, like taking a class or seeing a comedy show.

Set Your Boundaries

Set your boundaries and stick to them. Whether it’s a set bedtime routine or a discipline technique, you and your partner need to show a united front when making the rules. Your kids need to know that you both work together in harmony.

In a similar vein, don’t argue in front of them – it’s inevitable that there will be disagreements in a relationship, but don’t reveal them in front of the whole family. Create a calm and stable home environment for the kids.

Be Honest

It’s important to address if something isn’t working. Unfortunately, things don’t always go to plan and if you do decide to go your separate ways then consider seeking advice from professionals, such as those at Withers LLP, to make the transition as smooth as possible. This will help your children to remember that ultimately, they’re still in a loving family.

There are many pressures that make it a challenge to maintain a happy family life. Encourage communication and spend quality time together as a unit, as well as with your partner. These small changes will allow you to keep a happy household for adults and children alike.
