Girls can like Spiderman too!
When I found out that I was having girls I was over the moon and I immediately started looking at buying various clothes and toys.
I looked for the usual white baby all-in-ones and vests and obviously bought a few pink items too.
Our girls are three and a half now and I love how different they are!
M is quite girly. She loves wearing dresses and playing with dolls. Her favourite colour varies from pink to red and back again.
She likes to dress up as a ballerina and princesses. Her favourite at the moment is Cinderella and Belle from Beauty and the Beast.
R isn’t as girly as M, but she does on occasion like to don a fairy outfit. She prefers to wear her blue shorts and a blue t-shirt. She loves football too, but more than anything else in the world, she loves Spiderman!
It all started when on holiday in Menorca earlier this year. We’d gone into the gift shop in the hotel lobby and agreed that the girls could have a football each. M picked up a pink Disney Frozen one and R picked up a Spiderman one. She didn’t know who Spiderman was so she asked me. I explained that it was Spiderman and that was pretty much the end of the conversation, until a few days later when she wanted to know more about Spiderman.
Ever since that day her obsession has grown! We have an animated version of Spiderman on DVD for her, plus she has a Spiderman doll.
I love that she loves ‘boys things’ – that’s her words, not mine!
I keep telling her that Spiderman is a girls things too, but she insists that she loves boys things!
We were recently sent some fancy dress costumes from ASDA to review. Sadly Spiderman wasn’t available in her size, so we opted for Captain America instead because the costume was the same colour as the Spiderman one.
Her face says it all! That massive smile! She loves it and now has a new obsession alongside her Spiderman one!
She already knew who Captain America was because she has an Avengers lunchbox! I asked her if she wanted a blue or pink Disney Frozen lunch box when we were in a shop one day, but the blue Avengers one caught her eye so that’s what she chose!
M chose the pink Frozen one!
It amazes me that still to this very day, people associate blue with boys and pink with girls, Spiderman for boys and Barbie for girls. Boys can like Barbie too and girls can most definitely love Spiderman!

I love how kids go their own way. I hate that the world places rules on them – my twin boys (5y) have just started to say things like "I'm not having that – it's pink. Pink is for giiiirrrrls" which I know they've picked up from their school mates. My 3yo daughter is obsessed with anything pink and frilly, and if it's pink and frilly AND has some reference to Frozen then it's always a winner. But lately she's been wanting to wear the boys' old clothes as I've been sorting them out to give to charity shops. I think she just wants to be like them as she idolises them. I just go with the flow. I'm sure before she starts school she'll have plenty more phases and clothes obsessions so I'm sure a Spiderman one is probably waiting for me around the corner! But for now it's all about princesses and tutus!

I totally agree – I grew up with an older brother so I was into all the comic book heros you would play with all his transformer toys

I think it is lovely that they are so different, my daughter used to love playing with her brothers cars she could spend hours playing with them, likewise the boys have been found playing with her dolls house x

I was a real tomboy and hated it when I had to wear a dress. It is sad that people all too easily slip girls and boys into stereotypical boxes when there is nothing wrong with boys playing with dolls or girls enjoying spiderman for example. Every child should be allowed to be who they want to me no matter what sex they are. #MyFavouritePost

It's lovely that your daughter knows her own mind and what she likes. It really doesn't matter what it is, the independence and individuality is wonderful. My twins are quite different to each other as well.

Totally Agree! My eldest has always loved some boys things but my youngest is a big fan of 'boys toys'. She loves star wars, spiderman, trains and dinosaurs xx
