My family and I are luck that we have a lovely garden. It’s not huge, but I’s big enough for the four of us to play in, relax in and be together in. A garden can be a real addition to any home, even more so when you have young children.
From hosting barbecues to sports days and picnics, a garden has many purposes. With this in mind I always think it’s important to create an outdoor space that has a little something for everyone.
I like to have a place where I can relax. Somewhere calm, quiet and serene. I like reading books and blogs so a garden hammock or big comfy garden chair would be ideal for me.
Taking inspiration from the Japanese and their laid back approach to gardens means that an outdoor water feature would be also be an added bonus. The calming sound of water trickling would help me to de-stress and relax after a busy day of work or looking after the kids.
For my husband outdoor dining is an important part of a garden. He’d want enough space for a fairly big barbecue. It’d have to be safe so that the children couldn’t get near it. Maybe on some decking with a small gate or a raised platform.
A dining table big enough for the whole family to come over would be wonderful. We could lay out a table cloth, pitchers of cold juice, dishes of freshly picked salads and of course a beautiful set of garden crockery!
For my children it’s important to have a safe place for them to play in. It needn’t be complicated or expensive. A simple patch of grass for them to run around in and maybe a slightly larger area with a slide, swing and a trampoline in for them to bounce off their energy!
That’s one of the great things about gardens. Whatever you decide to do to it, you can almost guarantee that it’ll look good. It can be a real mixture of modern ideas mixed with oriental fusion and kid-safe areas, and it can still be a functional, family-friendly outdoor space.
If you have pets you could even consider dedicating a small area of the garden to them. A water and food bowl, kennel or comfy box with cushion in for them lay in. Maybe a rabbit run too!
Whatever you decide to do to your garden, have fun doing it!

Hi Hannah, thanks for your comment. I wish the pictures were my garden! Mine's not as big or as nice as the ones pictured, but it's a lovely garden with a decked area where we grow fruit and veg and our girls have some garden toys so it serves it's purpose well! x
