You Tube Kids App – Launch Party at London Zoo!
Technology is pretty amazing. I’m always amazed at how different things are now compared to when I was a child. I remember having a dial up internet connection and playing roller coaster tycoon on my parents huge desktop PC.
I think children of today I are so lucky because they have so much technology available to them. As long as it’s used correctly and monitored by parents then the internet and all it has to offer is a great learning resource.
One of my favourite things on the internet is You Tube. I use it to share my own videos, but also to watch what other people are up to. I like to watch music videos, funny cats and children doing adorable things! I also use You Tube to show my children videos. Mainly Peppa Pig and pretty much anything on CBeebies.
Now You Tube have made it even easier to find content that is dedicated specifically to children.
You Tube Kids is You Tube’s new app for children. You’ll find a world of family-friendly videos to explore, created by parents. You Tube Kids makes it easier for kids to find videos on topics they want to explore. You Tube Kids is already available in the US and has been downloaded more than 10 million times by families who are rating it among the top kids apps available.
We were invited to join the You Tube team at London Zoo last weekend for the launch of the You Tube Kids app and we had a great time.
Our twins, aged three, were able to test out the app and the results were very positive. It’s easy to use which meant our girls got the hang of it very quickly. The app’s design makes it easy for children to find what they’re looking for. The large images and bold icons make it fast and simple for little hands to navigate. There’s also a built in voice search so that even if your child can’t spell or type, they can still find videos of things they’re curious about.
With the You Tube Kids app options have been built in to help parents control the experience for their kids.
When you first download and open the app, parents can learn upfront about how the system chooses and recommends content, and also how to flag videos. You can also make a choice about how broadly you want your child to explore – turn search on to access millions of family friendly videos, or turn search off to restrict your child’s experience to a more limited set.
I also love that the app has a timer which lets you limit your kids’ screen time!
At the launch party in London Zoo, in addition to testing the app, our girls also had lots of fun exploring the Octonauts Octopod Ball Pit and meeting Captain Barnacles.
They loved playing with the Thomas the Tank Engine toys – it’s a good thing they’ll be getting some off Santa this year!
We also enjoyed meeting Postman Pat and seeing some super cool animals!

At last! YouTube has done something to make it easier for kids! Great thinking! My mummy hates vetting what I'm watching especially as I seem to go from Frozen Surprise Eggs to Frozen to Artic documentaries to hard hitting news feeds. #TriedTested we'll be checking this out! Thanks for sharing!
