Tips for looking after your car this winter

As a car owner, looking after my car is important to me. Even more so in the winter months. My car is an important part of my life. It transports me from work and home again, but it also carries my children on a very regular basis. It’s for this reason that I decided to write this post and share with you my tips for looking after your car this winter.

Invest in a car port

My first tip is to invest in a car port. Now I know this may not be possible for everyone, but if you can I highly recommend doing so. Carports offer sturdy weather protection from ice, rain and snow. It makes getting in and out of the car in bad weather a more pleasant experience as you’ll be undercover, as well as your car!

Carports can be fixed to connect to a porch or doorway to the vehicles space. Ideal for transporting shopping and small children to and from the house. There are a few different types of carports available so it’s always doing some research first. There’s no better way to look after your car this winter than by taking out breakdown cover. The last thing you’ll want is to find yourself stuck on the hard shoulder of a fast moving motorway with children.

Breakdown cover needn’t be expensive. Quite often the cost can be spread monthly. There are different types of cover available depending on how far you drive and the type of recovery options you want. Do your research and get covered.

Health checks aren’t just for people

If you’re planning a long journey or a journey in bad weather conditions then give your car the once over. If you’re unsure of what to do, or what to look out for, then it’s probably best to take your car to a garage. However, here are a few pointers:

Check your oil, brake fluid and water levels
Check your tyre pressure also the tread. The legal minimum is 1.6mm
Make sure you have antifreeze in your radiator and top it up in your screenwash
Check your wipers work properly

Carry a spare

Always make sure you carry a spare tyre in your car. You never know when you’re going to need and you can guarantee that when you do it’ll be at the worst, most inconvenient time possible!

Defrost Safely

If you find that you run out od de-icer, it’s ok t use warm water, but make sure it’s not boiling as this can cause damage to your windscreen and even possibly crack it.
