Tips for remodelling your bathroom

November 17, 2015
Remodelling a bathroom is a big undertaking that requires planning and quite a bit of thought. So before you pull up the vinyl flooring and prise the tiles from the walls, it’s best to do some research first.
Here are my tips for remodelling your bathroom:

1. Figure out what your budget is and then look around to find the cheapest prices for everything you need. Contacting local companies is worthwhile and that goes for workmen too. Get a few different quotes from different people to find the best deal.

2. Choose your colours carefully. If you’re going to spending a lot of money on your new bathroom, you need to make sure the colour scheme you go for is right. The last thing you’ll want to happen is to change your mind and have to start all over again. Pinterest is a great place for ideas and inspiration.

3. Bath or Shower? Do you want/need both? If you have children then you’ll probably want a bath, but if not why not consider just getting a shower. Showers are great space savers!

4. Decide what type of flooring you’d like. If you have young children or elderly relatives that will be using the bathroom you’ll probably want a non-slip floor. Tiles with textured surfaces are best as they provide more grip than smooth ones. Of course you can lay a bath mat down on the floor too, but that may cause a trip hazard so choose carefully.

5. Consider how much storage you need and how many surfaces you need. Under sink storage units are great for hiding bits and pieces out of sight, but remember you might need surfaces too. Surfaces are great for keeping mirrors, baskets and anything else you might need out.

6. Always go and see products first hand before buying. I know it’s easily done, but don’t rush in and buy online without going and having a proper look first. Something that looks good online may not look good in real life.

7. Something that’s quite often overlooked when remodelling a bathroom is height. In my home, the person who lived there previously was either very tall or was fond of his ladder and wanted to get as much use out if as possible so he put all of the mirrors up far too high! This goes for hand rails too! Measure your height and place mirrors and rails etc at the right height!

8. Lighting is important in a bathroom if this is where you’ll be doing most of your ‘grooming’! A light on the ceiling is great, but also consider a unit that lights up or a vertical light on the wall.
