Tips for better photography

January 20, 2015
One of my new year’s resolutions is to improve my photography skills. Before I bought my camera I always used my phone to take photos. Nothing wrong with doing that as it did the job for capturing holidays, days out and anything else that caught my eye, but now that I have children I’d like to be able to take better pictures of them.

The other reason that I’d like to improve my photography is so that I can take better pictures of products I’m sent to review. With this in mind I think it’s about time I took my camera off the ‘auto’ setting and learnt how to use it properly!

Here are my tips so for better photography

  • Look into Superzoom cameras. Superzoom lenses have massive optical zoom and a broad focal range. Much better than what you’d get with a DSLR kit lens or compact camera. Superzoom cameras are compact meaning you can easily bring them anywhere with you and they won’t break your budget
  • Play around with different types of photos and decide what looks best. Sometimes getting everything in the frame isn’t always the best option. A close up can often be more effective and help you to feel as though you’re actually in the picture yourself
  • Practise. As the saying goes ‘practise makes perfect’. Take your camera everywhere with you. You never know when you’ll come across something worth taking a picture of
  • Take a variety of pictures from moving objects and people to stationary buildings and nature
  • Use the light around you. If you’re taking pictures outdoors find out where the light is coming from, is the sun behind you or in front of you? Use it to your advantage to get the best shot
  • Take pictures at different times of day. Early morning, midday and at night. Honing your skills in these different types of environment will help you to adapt to your surroundings and find out what works best for you
  • Keep it simple. Sometimes the simplest of photos are the best. An captured spur of the moment without much thought can often be the best ones
  • Focus on your object. If you’re taking a picture of a subject with a busy background, make sure you focus on the object to ensure that they’re the focal point
  • Have fun. Experiment with different techniques and styles until you find what suits you best!
