The Mother Octopus

August 3, 2016
Being a parent is both rewarding and tough. It’s stressful, exhausting and relentless one day, but the next it could be filled with fun, laughter and wonderful memories.

The one thing I find the most frustrating about being a parent is that my children think I’m an octopus. I’m not joking! They really do!

They seem to think that I have multiple arms and can do multiple things at once. I wish! I really do wish this was true. Imagine the possibilities! Imagine all of the things I could get done if only I were like an octopus.

One day M asked me to fix one of her toys. I was stood in the kitchen and happily obliged. As I took the toy from her hands to assess the damage, M then asks me if she can have something to eat. I asked her what she would like me to do. Fix the toy or get her something to eat. She quickly replied with fix the toy.

That mightn’t seem so bad to you, but it gets worse. Double the worseness when twins are involved and they both have things they want me to do.

Like a chorus of birds, although the sound isn’t as pleasant as birds singing, more like cats howling, they both come bounding into whatever room I’m in.

One will shout, mum I’m hungry, followed by, ‘can we go out?’

Almost at the same time, the other will yell, mum wear are my sparkly shoes and can you put you tube kids on the TV for me?

Just as I’m going to answer, they both talk at the same time. Asking me things I can’t quite hear whilst inquisitively peering at my face for an answer.

It’s almost like a scene from a movie where the main star is being bombarded by another character, yet they zone out!

I find myself saying to our girls to stop and talk one at a time as I can’t hear them when they both talk at once!

It’s funny isn’t it. How children think their parents can do anything and everything at the same time! I don’t think children think that their mummy and daddy ever get tired!

Surely I’m not alone. Do your kids think you’re an octopus too?!

Yes – my kids think I'm an octopus too. And my response is often the same as yours: "what would you like me to do first?" The biggest issue is when I'm trying to make the dinner one-handed because velcro baby is attached to my hip and then I'm asked to make a drink, fix the toy, referee and argument and wipe the toddler's bottom – all at the same time!

haha! Kids don't realise whta they ask for. I admit I could be like that sometimes. Papa just needs to oblige and that's it LOL. They are so cute. How can you not? #bestandworst

Kids are like this aren't they! They want your undivided attention all the time. Bet you wouldn't change them for the world though? 🙂

Mine doesn't usually have multiple things at once for me to do, but there is always something, usually as soon as I sit down or start something else #bestandworst

Totally! I am finding this more than ever since having a second child – one wants something and that other the complete opposite – always at the same time!! Wish I have more than two arms

I just think they are just the centre of the Universe…it must be such a tough lesson to learn everything is not moving around them and parents can just do everything at once!! I wish I could remember it!! hehe. Great post and thanks for sharing with #bestandworst x

Yeah I think this is a classic symptom of parenthood haha. With our eldest being a crazy 2 year old and our youngest now crawling it's as hectic as ever in our house. We could definitely do with a few more arms and hands between us.

I find this a lot with my three. They are very different and want different things. Being an only child I assumed they'd be little clones, especially the boys. I was so wrong. x

Oh of course! And I've also worked in childcare for 17 years, imagine having upto 20 children all shouting at you at the same time!! It is lovely how they think we're super women though isnt it? 🙂 #binkylinky

Oh, he does! He expects me to do EVERYTHING and it's exhausting haha. But I suppose when they are older and don't need us as much we will think back to these days and miss them! #BinkyLinky

Hahaha I had a great laugh! I can laugh because I can relate 😀 My boys (18mo) are starting to be really vocal and demanding even though they can't really talk yet. They both come to me and ask me to read them books, feed them, etc, over and over all day long LOL Whenever they are awake, I am apparently not allowed to use my phone. They started to slap my phone off of my hand like "You have to read this same book 30 more times! You don't have time to use your phone!" haha.
I can only imagine that gets worse as they are older and can actually talk!!
I love how you refered it as an octopus!! They think you are a super mommy!!

Yes feel your pain Emily. I thought as they got older it might ease off. It only gets worse!

How you manage to blog, sew and run the house I don't know

As a grandparent of twins I sympathise. One child is not to bad to contend with but two two year olds wanting different things and both trying to out yell each other. Out in public in a play park when they both run off in different directions is also a nightmare.
