The importance of taking care of your loved ones after you’re gone – A Person Experience

December 20, 2016

It’s not something that many people think about. I mean who really wants to plan their own funeral? However, I think it’s such an important thing to do.

Sadly, last month, my sister and I lost our grandad. The last time I’d seen him properly was when I was a child, but I had been to visit him in adulthood, once when he was hospital, and the time after this was in his last final moments.

Although I didn’t have a relationship with him, my sister and I are his next of kin. My mum, his daughter, passed away 11 years ago.

When our grandad passed away, a lot of things were left to my sister and I to sort out. Granted my sister sorted his funeral out, but it left me wondering about my own personal experiences.

We found out that our grandad had a pre-paid funeral plan. This took a lot of stress off my sister and I, as we were both concerned about how the funeral would be paid for otherwise.

Up until this point in my life, I never knew that you could get a pre-paid funeral, but I think it’s a great idea, and I for one will definitely be doing this.

The last thing I’d want is to put a financial burden on my children, or husband. At least this way I’d be happy in knowing that it was all sorted. I know people have life insurance and other types of insurances which can be used to pay for funerals, but by the time you get paid out, it’s almost always too late.

I know this is a rather random thing to write about, but it just got me thinking. I know it’s not a nice thing to think about, and knowing that my grandad had sat down with a funeral director and planned every part of his funeral makes me feel sad, but I also think it’s a necessity.

What do you think?

Sorry to hear about this. I guess you’re right. It’s things like this that make us realise what we need etc. A prepaid plan sounds a lot less stressful for people x

Unfortunately, it’s something that we all do have to consider. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed to any of us. Sorry for your loss Emily
