Saving money around the home

As a pretty thrifty family, we like to save money at every opportunity. We have solar panels on the roof of our home to help with our energy bills and we’re always careful to ensure that we turn lights off, as well as taps, and other appliances that aren’t being used.

As a family of four, which includes four year old twins, saving money around the home can sometimes be pretty tricky. Quite often the girls will leave the lights on in the rooms that they’ve been in and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to turn the tap off after they’ve washed their hands or brushed their teeth! I’m pretty sure I was the same a kid too so I can’t be too harsh on them!

Looking into the family finances can be a pretty daunting task, but if you go into it with an open mind and a positive, can do attitude you may well surprise yourself at just how many ways you can save yourself some money. Here are some of my top tips for saving money around the home.

Give your bank account the once over


When it comes to bank accounts, is yours doing everything it can for you? It’s worth looking at the various types of accounts you have. Whether it be a current account, ISA or savings account, find out what the interest rate is and if there are any hidden charges. Do you get any rewards with your account?

Finding the right bank account that saves you money and gives you a good interest rate is a great way to save money.

Whilst you’re at it, I always find it helpful to look through my payments. Direct debits and standings order can often be forgotten about so it’s important to ensure that you’re only paying services you actually use.

Have a monthly gym membership, but never go? Cancel it!

Paying for a TV package that you never watch or make the most of? Cancel it!

Of course, you’ll need to check for any cancellation fees, but sprucing up your finances is a sure fire way to save some pennies!

Home improvements

When people think of home improvements they automatically think that it’s going to cost a lot of money, but some small and simple changes can actually help you to save money.


Velux Blinds from the company VELUX can help to improve insulation in your home making it feel warmer, meaning you have the heating on less in turn saving you money.

You can even get blackout blinds, which we have in our twins room, and they’re great for blocking out the light summer evenings.

Count the pennies


My husband has a jar in our kitchen that he uses to collect change in. It’s full of pennies, 20 pence and 50 pence coins.

It’s actually really surprising to see how much can be collected over the course of a month or so. It’s also pretty handy if you ever need change for the bus or a loaf of bread!

Get creative with your food


This is something that I think lots of people are guilty of. Not using up the food they have in their cupboards. It’s easy to over look a can of chopped tomatoes and half a packet of dried pasta, along with the remaining veg from Sunday dinner. You may even be tempted to bin it, but don’t!

You could use it to create a tasty meal. Raid your cupboards and see what you have in them. You can even look online for recipes using the ingredients you’ve found for some ideas and inspiration.
