Review: Family Life Coma Gran, Majorca
Every year we go on one family holiday abroad. We tend to book an all-inclusive package holiday with Thomson as we’ve been on holiday with them a few times previously, and have always had a good experience.
This year was no exception. We booked our family holiday to Majorca for seven days and after browsing the Thomson website in search of the ‘perfect family friendly hotel’ I found the Family Life Coma Gran.
Located in Sa Coma, which sits on Majorca’s east coast, the Coma Gran is just a stone’s throw away from the beach. It’s also situated on the town’s main drag so you’re surrounded by numerous restaurants and shops.
We opted for a one bedroom apartment. This is an apart-hotel, so the apartments are all located within the same hotel building. I’ve never stayed in an apart-hotel before, and if I’m honest whenever I’ve seen the word ‘apart-hotel’ before when it comes to booking holidays I usually click off the page, but I’m glad I didn’t this time.
The extra space that our apartment offered us in comparison to a hotel room was great. It meant that we had a spacious living room in addition to the bedroom. There was also a small kitchen which includes a fridge, kettle, microwave and hob.
What was even more impressive was that because our room was right at the very end of the corridor, on the corner of the hotel, we had two balconies! One off the living room and one off the bedroom. We didn’t really use the one off the bedroom though. Both overlooked the swimming pool, and the one off the living room offered a small glimpse of the beach!
I imagine if we had been at the other end of the hotel, we would have had more of a sea view. We weren’t too bothered about this though as we didn’t spend much time in our room. The only downside of the location of our room was that there was a pub right beneath us which had live music every night, which didn’t finish until around midnight. As you can imagine this isn’t ideal when you’re on holiday with children! Thankfully though, it didn’t disturb our sleep too much, although complimentary ear plugs might have been a nice added touch!
The living room had a sofa bed, chair and table, plus a TV. The bathroom was pretty big and offered both a bath and shower (over the bath). The bedroom was made up of two single beds pushed together to make a double, which is pretty standard practise abroad. There was lots of storage for our cases and clothes too which was great!
The room was cleaned daily, except I believe on a Wednesday as that was the maids day off according to a sign in the hotel reception. On one day they did forget to give us towels, but a quick trip to reception quickly solved this issue!
Moving on from our room, the hotel itself is well presented, modern and very clean. The hotel lobby is spacious and offers seating. This is also where you can find the Thomson reps should you need to ask them any questions or book any excursions etc.
The hotel has both stairs and lifts to all floors so it’s easily accessible, plus the path that leads out to the swimming pool is flat. There are no stairs so it’s perfect for wheelchair users and those with pushchairs.
You can access the swimming pool area from the lobby. Also leading off from the lobby is a small bar where there is also a stage. The bar wasn’t open during our stay and the stage in this area wasn’t used either as the outside stage was used, but I imagine in colder weather the inside stage is a handy addition.
As you walk through the bar area, you’ll come to the buffet restaurant. The room is large with plenty of seating and lots of friendly staff. Food is served at the following times:
Breakfast: 8am-10am
Lunch: 12.30pm-3pm
Dinner: 6pm-9pm
On our first day we were greeted by a friendly waitress. We were given wristbands when we first arrived to show that we were all inclusive. This is great as it means there’s no queueing up to give room numbers, as you can walk straight in, and what’s even better is that you can choose your own seats.
At breakfast you’re free to get your own drinks, whether it be a hot cup of tea or coffee, apple juice or orange juice. However at lunch and dinner the waitresses and waiters will get your drinks for you. If you like your tea and coffee you may want to bring your own, as this facility is only available at breakfast time in the restaurant. However, Thea’s Coffee Shop by the swimming pool does offer tea and coffee during the day.
Food wise, there is a good selection available. I like that there is a separate area for children’s food with small plates and cutlery. There are also plastic cups available too.
There’s a huge salad bar with plenty of fruit too, and if you’re a vegetarian there’s even a whole area dedicated to you.
The live cooking area is where you line up to choose your food. It’s great that you can see the chefs cooking the food, but I did find the service a little slow at times. They didn’t seem to be able to keep up the demand and I found myself waiting on a few occasions for them to finish cooking more chicken, lamb, etc.
Breakfast offers up a choice of a cooked breakfast including sausages, bacon, egg, beans, hash browns etc. There’s also fresh omelettes and a selection of cereal, donuts and croissants. You can also make your own toast and there are plenty of condiments such as jam, marmalade and butter.
Lunch and dinner time in the buffet restaurant offers a range of hot food such as lamb, beef, paella etc. There’s always chips and of course you also have the salad bar. I have to say that the salmon was delicious and the paella was tasty too!
During the day Thea’s snack bar is offers sandwiches, drinks and snacks such as crisps, cake and fruit. I recommend the Peter Pan drink if you’re looking for something refreshing! It’s a mixture of fruit including lime, pineapple and oranges!
The swimming pool area has plenty of sunbeds. My husband did reserve us some on the days we decided we’d stay by the pool, but if you forget, you needn’t worry as there were always a few empty ones a bit further away from the pool.
There’s a splash park for kids which consists of a shallow water pool and a variety of slides, plus there were also some water features for the children to run under the water etc.
The main swimming pool has two shallow ends and both have steps leading into them so it’s easy to enter the water. Our four year old twins preferred the bigger pool. I think this was because it was warmer than the kids pool, plus they learnt to swim so enjoyed swimming around the big pool, something they weren’t able to do in the kids pool.
Both pools have lifeguards. The Thomson reps were also on hand to deliver some daily entertainment from water aerobics to water polo!
If you walk behind the children’s pool, you’ll find a park and a football pitch. The park was split into two areas. One for smaller children and one area for older children. Our girls enjoyed playing in the park. It was never too busy and was always clean and tidy. I do think it would have been nice if the football pitch area had some complimentary footballs for guests to use though.
Moving away from the pool area you have the main stage which is situated over-looking the pool and alongside Thea’s Coffee Shop. This is where they had children’s activities during the day – I’m not sure what these were though as we didn’t take part! The main stage is also where the evening’s entertainment is held. The children’s shows were really good. You had Thomson dog and the super pups, a brilliant clown show called Coco and Charlie which we all loved, plus download@611 which was a mixture of games, dancing and singing.
The adult entertainment sadly wasn’t as good as the children’s entertainment! Thomson have their own entertainment team made up of professionally trained singers and dancers, but it just wasn’t great!
One night there was a flamingo dancing show which was a professional show, but it was pretty boring. Other nights the Thomson entertainment team sang and danced, but it was very average! So much so that we’d usually end up in the park or soft play area with our girls.

The soft play area was located underneath the hobby lobby. It was a lovely large room and just outside it was a green area which had ride on cars available for the children to play on. One day they even had some Lego out.
In the same area there is a kids club. We didn’t use this service, but if you do use kids clubs when on holiday then it’s good to know that there is one there.
Also located on this level is a spa and gym with indoor swimming pool. Whilst we didn’t use these facilities either, we did have a nose and I have to say the pool looked amazing!
Overall, we had a fantastic time and I would highly recommend the Coma Gran for a fabulous family holiday!

I haven't been to Majorca since I was a kid. Looks like a fab hotel with the right mix of facilities.

It looks like a lovely hotel. We're on the hunt for a holiday at the moment and have been checking out Majorca. I'll go and do some pricing on this as it looks like somewhere well suited to families.

The hotel looks lovely. We stayed in Porto Pollensa in the North of Majorca a few years ago. The hotels look vaguely similar.
