Preparing for Twins: What I Wish I Knew Before They Arrived

December 16, 2024

I knew it all when I found out I was having twins. Like, how tough could that really be? Two babies double the nappies, double the feeds, sure—but I reckoned I’d make it. The thing I found out in a hurry was, that there’s your knowing of it, and then it’s a different thing altogether when reality slaps you in the face. So here goes, the stuff I’m pretty much wishful somebody would have whispered to me while the babies were small and just about everything seemed overwhelming.

Sleep Won’t Be What You Expect

You think you’re prepared for the sleep deprivation—haven’t all your friends been talking about it? But seriously, sleep deprivation with twins equates to sleep deprivation times two. And it’s not just the case of “one up, one down.” Nope. Twins can uncannily coordinate their wakings. I soon learned to embrace the concept of sleep in snatched winks whenever and wherever. Afternoon naps, short naps on the sofa—just anything to survive.

Would I change that? Never, but if I could go back, I would tell myself not to sweat the routines and perfect nap times—just embrace the chaos, because fighting it only makes it harder.

A Turning Point

It wasn’t until I had my 19 to 20 Week Morphology Scan that reality truly set in. There, on the screen in front of me, were two perfectly formed little people. It finally clicked—this was real, this was happening. Exciting, emotional, and a little terrifying, suddenly it wasn’t just about preparing for their arrival; it was about getting my mind ready, too.

That scan, too, put my mind at ease. Knowing that both the babies were well on and also understanding their positioning helped me focus on what I could control—like organizing their space at home, reading up on twin-specific tips, and just taking a breath.

The Way You View Your Relationship

That was a big blind spot for me: Having twins is a big adjustment for you, but twins are also a huge adjustment for your partner. You’re suddenly learning about juggling two tiny people and still showing up to each other. I didn’t realize how imperative communication was going to be with twins, and I wish I did.

There were days when we felt like teammates in survival mode rather than a couple. And that’s okay. But looking back, carving out even the smallest moments for “us” made all the difference. Ten minutes of coffee together, a quick cuddle on the sofa—it all matters.

Don’t Stress About Doing It Perfectly

You won’t get everything right, and that’s totally okay. When you’re juggling two newborns, there will be days when one cries while you’re feeding the other. Or someone gets a bit more attention because they’re fussier. It doesn’t mean you’re failing.

You’ll learn to go easy on yourself because perfection is impossible. What matters is that you show up every day and love those little bundles as best you can. They don’t care if the laundry isn’t folded or if the kitchen’s a mess—what they need is you.

Twice the Work, Twice the Joy

Sure, twins are hard work, but they are a blessing. From watching them grow up and develop a relationship with one another that basically no one will ever quite understand to just basically the cuteness of them little babies, even the tiny interactions between ’em are really magic.

Of course, nothing will ever prepare you for the chaos, but that sweet look from the two of them will be worth all your exhaustion. Twins may be double the challenge, but they are double the joy.
