Tenerife family holidays
The great thing about the start of a new year, is looking forward to all of the wonderful things it has in store for you and your family. For us, as a family of four with secondary school age children, our primary focus for any new year is getting a holiday booked in.
We’ve had various types of family holidays over the years. From caravans and camping to theme parks and all-inclusive packages. With that said, I must say our favourite type of holiday is an all-inclusive resort somewhere warm where there is plenty to see and do for the whole family.
With that in mind, we’ve been looking at Tenerife. We’ve not been there before on a family holiday so it would be lovely to explore somewhere new together. When booking a Tenerife family holiday I like to look at what the destination has to offer. Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands. It has a dormant volcano, Mt. Teide, as well as lots of beaches – some with black sand – and resort areas, including Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas.
According to my research, the best time of year to visit Tenerife is between June and September. This is perfect as it falls in the school summer holidays.
As well as the glorious beaches there are also lots of activities and places to visit that would suit us a family. Here are a few:
- Whale and dolphin watching boat tours
- Mt. Teide and Masca Valley tour
- Siam Park (water park)
- Monkey park
- Lago Martianez – saltwater pools
When we go on holiday we like to spend the first day either at a nearby beach or at the hotel swimming pool. That first day of relaxation really helps us to prepare for a fun-packed schedule! The water park would be perfect for all of us and who doesn’t want to go whale and dolphin watching? It may be a one-in-a-lifetime experience for some people.

I must admit that when it comes to family holidays, I like to spend a bit of time on the first day deciding on what places we’d like to visit and then planning what days we’ll go to these places. I find it helps to know what we’re going to do on each day, but of course, while also allowing for flexibility. After all, it’s a family holiday so it should be relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.
Having some sort of plan in place helps to structure our days rather than waking up and wondering what to do that day. Naturally, everyone has an input on what they’d like to do and we always have a wonderful time together. I’d love to know if you also plan your days while on holiday or if you just go with the flow? I think maybe because we travel with children, so it always feels necessary to have some kind of plan in place. When my husband and I travelled before our children were born, we were definitely more go with the flow people!
