Parent & Carer First Aid Class Review with Daisy First Aid
One Sunday afternoon whilst sitting in my front room surrounded by the noise of our girls playing, I came across a video on Facebook that had been shared by Daisy First Aid.
The video showed a mum saving her daughter’s life with abdominal thrusts as the child was choking. Touch wood, our girls have never been in this situation, but I started thinking about how I would react in that same situation. The mum in the video had attended a first aid course. She remained calm and focused on what she needed to do in order to save her child’s life. Had she not have known what to do, would she have reacted differently?
I have no idea what I would have done if it had been me in that situation. I didn’t know first aid. I didn’t know what an abdominal thrust was either.
Spurred into action, I decided to book myself onto a parent and carer first course with Daisy First Aid. The trainer, Jo, has a background in paediatric nursing. She’s worked on most children’s wards including trauma and orthopaedics, adolescents, surgical and medical, as well as Accident and Emergency and Community.
The course took place in one of the community rooms in my local Tesco, but you can also arrange for Jo to come to your home to deliver the course for just £25pp.
The two hour course was relaxed, hands on and very informative. Topics covered included:
- Treatment of an unconscious patient (breathing and non-breathing)
- Recovery Positions
- Shock
- Resuscitation & CPR
- Choking
- Head injuries
- Fever
- Febrile Seizures
- Bleeding
- Burns
- Anaphylaxis
- Meningitis
- Bee Stings, grazes and more
Laid out on the floor were a mixture of baby and older child mannequins.
Jo started off the session by introducing what the course would cover. After learning all about DR ABC:
- Danger
- Response
- Airways
- Breathing
- Circulation
It was time to put what we’d learnt to the test.
We practiced putting each other into the recovery position, something I’m ashamed to say I didn’t know how to do before this course. We also practiced our resuscitation and CPR on both the baby and child mannequins.
Jo explained and showed us how to conduct CPR correctly and how many breaths were needed depending on the age of the patient. We practised our abdominal thrusts and back slaps in the event of choking.
Jo talked about meningitis amongst other topics and invited the class to ask and answer questions. I learnt so much from the class. It was a really valuable experience and is something that I wish I’d done sooner. I took away a Daisy First Aid Kit (£15) which contains pretty much everything you need to help save a life. It also contains bravery stickers for kids which I love! I also bought a first aid booklet (£5), so that my husband can read it. I’ll also be reading it from front to back too in an effort to remember all that I’ve learnt.
