Moving House with Young Kids: How to Keep Stress Levels Low

June 1, 2026

Moving house will always be a big deal and cause some stress, especially when you are moving with kids. It can be easy for the move to feel overwhelming when you factor in packing boxes, juggling routines, and keeping little ones calm through what can be an emotional experience for them. The good news is that, with a bit of planning and a few simple strategies, you can make the whole experience feel far more manageable.

Talk About the Move Early (& Keep it Positive)

Moving home can be a stressful, confusing, and emotional time for a child. Many find it helps to involve children in conversations about the move from the start, answer any questions they have honestly, and frame the move as the start of an exciting new chapter.

Show them pictures of their new home and which room is theirs. If they’re old enough, you could even include them in the decorating process and let them choose décor or a theme. Early communication can reduce anxiety and help kids feel more in control.

Stick to Routines Where You Can

Kids thrive under routines, but obviously, a move can be disruptive. This is why you want to maintain familiar routines as best you can, including mealtimes, bedtimes, and school routines, as well as weekend habits. This gives the children a sense of stability during an otherwise chaotic time, which can help them feel secure even when everything around them is changing, and they are saying goodbye to their first home.

Declutter Before You Pack

Moving home as a parent is daunting because you have an enormous amount of stuff compared to pre-children times. Sorting through belongings before moving can make the whole process smoother, cheaper, and less overwhelming. Work through the house room by room and decide what to keep, donate, sell, or store to avoid bringing unnecessary clutter into the new home.

Make Moving Day (& Beyond) More Flexible

Things rarely go exactly according to plan on moving day. Delays, property chains, and timing issues are common in the UK housing market. If possible, consider spreading the move across several days and using self-storage units in Colby or areas local to you to ease pressure and give your family breathing room. This prevents a chaotic rush and allows you to gradually move your possessions in, allowing you to get the layout right without having to move everything around multiple times.

When you move home with kids, there will always be some stress involved, as it is an enormous undertaking and can be a confusing time for young children. By talking about the move way before it happens and taking time to prepare properly, the process will be easier to manage for all.
