Research

Have a look at what styles of wedding cake you like. There are so many different types available. From multiple tiers to just the one. From the traditional 3-tier wedding cake to the more out-there colourful cakes, knowing what you want is a great place to start!

I like to look online for inspiration. A quick online search for wedding cakes will bring up some good images to get you started. Pinterest is also a wonderful place to look. Plus you can save any that catch your eye and create your very own Pinterest board.

Another great place to look for ideas and inspiration is in magazines and on social media. As soon as you know what your cake to look like, it’s time to make the most important decision. The recipe.

Planning

What flavour cake do you want? What type of cake? Sponge? Madeira? You also need to source all of the equipment you’ll need if you don’t already have everything. The Cake Craft Company has so many wonderful pieces to choose from. They have boards and boxes, tools such as rolling pins and turntables to cake dowels and piping supplies. I really like this wedding lovebirds silicone mould. It’s perfect for a wedding cake. What do you think?

Equipment

For your cake you will need:

  • Cake tins
  • Cake mould
  • Cake stand
  • Cake board
  • Cake dowels and rods
  • Piping bag
  • Piping nozzle
  • Cake decorations
  • Cake topper
  • Cake box

The above list are just some of the essentials you will need. In addition, you’ll need baking utensils such as a bowl and whisk.

Practise makes perfect

Now that you know what you want your cake to look like, what type of cake and flavour you want and what recipe you’re going to use it’s time to start practising. As they say, practise makes perfect. You should make more than one practise cake. This means you can make sure you get the taste just right, as well as the decoration. Making more than one cake well in advance will give you the opportunity to practise your baking and decorating skills.

Finally, and most importantly, when your final wedding cake is finished, make sure you store it correctly. This will depend on the type of cake you make so do your research. The last thing you want on your wedding day, is a mouldy cake!
