How To Budget For Your Next Car

May 18, 2020

When budgeting for your next car you need to make sure that you can afford it without having to say no to buying a new car. If you have kids, a car is essential and you need to work out your finances well to ensure that you can drive away with it and not worry about the money. You can look into different ways to budget for a car, one of which is looking at your own finances and looking at the mathematics behind it before you make a purchase. You should also take into consideration the following things:

  1. Monthly car payment should be no more than 15% of your gross pay or 20% of your take-home pay.
  2. Down payment should be at least 20% of purchase price
  3. Maximum term of a car loan should be 48 months before renewal
  4. Investing in a Tesla Powerwall and similar expenses related to your car

The average car is a few thousand and this will not be including the added extras, so looking at how the finance can be shared will be vital. The type of car that you buy will also determine how expensive it will be, for example if it is a big car that is stylish and new it will be more expensive to insure and run and if it breaks down it may be more expensive to fix. If it is a smaller car then it will probably be more economical and run better on fuel, even. Then again, this depends on the age of the car and if there have been any modifications attached to it. On the whole however, budgeting comes down to knowing what surpless money you have at the end of the month. If it isn’t much, then you have to fit this to your purchase. Used cars can be a good option for your next car.

Budgeting for a car must come in a simple set up – looking at everything that you will need to pay for. Which includes up front payments, deposits, monthly payments and yearly payments and renewal as and also budgets into any breakdown covers and repairs as well as its MOT.  You can look at cheap insurance to see what will be best for you, but make sure you know the differences between Comprehensive and Third Party Fire & Theft Insurance when doing so. Looking at what type of car you can afford is important and talking to your sales person to see what car is going to be the most inexpensive to run and which ones are going to be pricier. News cars of course are expensive and then immediately lose value once you drive it out of the showroom. Therefore, looking at second hand cars can also be an option and one that you shouldn’t put down. They are very important to look at if you have a family and want to budget.
You shouldn’t have to worry about financing a car, however, in today’s society, our outgoings are much more than they ever used to be and it is sensible to look at budgeting. If you make a strict list of what needs to be paid for and how you can afford it and if you are going to split any costs with your partner, then there should be nothing stopping you from getting that new car!
