Guest Post. Tips to avoid a toddler meltdown this summer!

July 4, 2015
Hi, I am excited to be invited by Emily to write a guest post for her lovely blog.

I blog through my toddlers eyes over at Ickle Pickles Life and Travels.

Here are our top tips to avoid a Toddler Meltdown this summer!

Hopefully, we will have a long hot summer, and children – especially toddlers – can get very hot and bothered and grumpy, leading to some momentous melt downs. Try these tips to help you avoid them!

1. Tots will get thirsty, quickly. They may confuse this for being hungry. Make sure they have access to a drink – water is the best, and  don’t forget if they like milk, it has to be kept in the fridge and drunk straight away. It goes off very quickly in the warm weather.

2. Keep your tot in the shade as much as possible, especially between 11am and 3pm. If you are out in the sunshine, make sure your tot wears a hat with a brim, and / or a neck flap. The skin on the back of the neck is very sensitive.

3. If your tot is in a pushchair, make sure he is covered by a parasol or sunshade, and check as you move around that he is kept covered.

4. Tots tend to lose their appetites when it is very hot. Offer food as usual, but don’t be surprised if they don’t eat as much. Don’t make meal times a battle – you will both probably get grumpier more quickly in the heat!

5. Keep his bedroom cool, keep the curtains closed, and windows open (safely). Try and make sure he has a nap – heat is very tiring – but never leave him napping in a hot car. If this is unavoidable, open the windows, and park in the shade. (It goes without saying that you will be in the car with him).

I hope these tips help, and that you have a lovely summer!

The worst thing was attempting to apply sun cream to a toddler who Was Not Having It and getting their hat to stay on their head. Good tips for children of all ages.

Hi Mrs Tubbs, thanks for your comment! Luckily our girls didn't mind us applying sun cream, but they hated having their hair washed after going to the beach! Had to tempt them in with treats!!

Ah, just what I needed to read! My little girl has just turned two and find her mood can switch in an instant – it’s a real learning curve to know how to handle the tantrums, as much as I know this is all part of their development, it can be hard!
