In August 2017 I accepted redundancy from a job that I’d been in for 13 years. It was a tough decision to make, but ultimately I do truly believe it was the right decision.
I decided that I’d look for a new part time job, and although I did quickly get another job, it wasn’t all that it was made out to be. In October 2017 after spending weeks spent looking for other jobs online, I decided to start my own business.
The majority of part time jobs that I’d seen advertised either turned out to be full time or the hours available weren’t suitable.
The decision to start my own business was a scary concept for me. Ever since I started working I’ve always worked for someone else. That means I’ve always had the security of a regular pay cheque, holiday and sick pay etc. I knew that working for myself would mean a lot of hard work and that I’d have to put money aside in case I did get ill, but with the support of my husband, my business took off and it served its purpose well.
The business I started was a cleaning company. I could work for myself which means choosing my own hours, setting my own rate of pay and ultimately I’d have more flexibility and be able to spend more time with my family. In addition to cleaning peoples houses on a regular basis, I also took on end of tenancy cleaning.
It was a job that filled a gap where I needed to earn money, but I knew that it wasn’t what I wanted to do long term.
During my time as a cleaner I continued to check job advertisements, but I never found anything suitable. That was until a few weeks ago.
I applied for a job as a legal administrator/assistant and was offered an interview. I thought the interview went well, but you can never really tell can you?
Anyway, I’m pleased to say that I was offered the job and I accepted it as quickly as I could! It means working Monday-Friday, but it’s only a few hours each day so I can still take our children to school and pick them up.
It’s not far from where I live and the prospects are really good. I’m actually really excited to get started!
This means that I’ve now closed the cleaning business down, and a new chapter of my life is about to begin!
