2019: The Year of Family Camping Holidays

As per the title of this post, 2019 is going to be the year that we as a family will embrace camping!

I have fond memories of camping when I was a child. I remember my parents having a practise run in the garden of putting the tent up, taking it down and packing it all away again.

In all fairness it was a lovely big tent. I don’t recall how long it took to put up. My sister and I were probably off playing and running around whilst out parents took on the tent building challenge!

I don’t even remember what we ate on our camping holidays either. Did my parents cook food? If so, how? Did they have one of those camping cooker things? I have no clue!

What I do remember though is having a sleeping bag on top of an air bed to sleep in, and having to walk a fair old distance to the shower block to have a freezing cold shower!

I also remember there was a laundrette to wash your clothes in!

I also remember walking down to the beach, eating outdoors and having a wonderful time!

My husband, can you believe, has never been camping!

It’s so much fun, providing you have the right weather!

So, getting back on point!

This year, I plan on taking our family on a few weekend camping breaks.

I’ve done a very small amount of research into the different camping sights around, and do have my sights set on one in particular to start with, but the problem is I have no clue about what I’ll need to buy, or about what to bring with us!

I guess that’s the fun thing about it! We’ll learn as we go!

I’ve read about electric hookups, and being totally honest I have no idea what this means, but I’m sure I can find out!

I have no idea as to what types of food to bring with us, or how we’ll cook it either, but what I do know is that we’ll have an amazing time!

Getting back to nature and being technology free! Although, I will use my phone to take some pictures to capture the evidence that I finally managed to get my husband to go camping!

I’m also lucky that one of the ladies from the school my children go to, is a regular camper, along with her son, so here’s hoping she will impart some of her camping wisdom with me!

I also think that when we have a tent and the other things we need to go camping, we can just up and go as and when we like! Booking a camp sight can often be done. few days in advance, so we could wake up midweek and decide to go camping that very same weekend if we wanted!

Can you tell I’m very excited by this idea!

Have you been camping? Have your children? Please share your must haves and tips with me in the comments below!

  1. Aw such great memories sis! I remember camping up on the Gower and you nearly lost your sleeping bag off the edge of the cliff! Would be lovely to take the kids camping get a bbq going and enjoy the outdoors

  2. We’ve done camping before. In the end, with 4 children and the dogs, we just didn’t have the car space for it. I did once have a trailer for camping, however, I naively didn’t realise my driving license was issued just after the automatic inclusion of permission top tow a trailer was included on all driving licences was stopped. Thus, I was never actually allowed to tow it unless I took another test!
I enjoy camping though and I myself intend to get some time under canvas this year with the kids. My wife, on the other hand, has no intention of doing so!

  3. I have done camping before when I was young and single. Hehe! I would love to go camping with my children and hubby when the kids are older. Or maybe I can settle for “glamping” for now!

    Lovely post and photos.

  4. I loved reading this, we camp a fair bit and the kids love it. I have just started converting my work van into a camper van. Once completed our adventures will continue #ThatFridayLinky

  5. Yes Emily, I can tell you are excited! As it happens, Mrs Adams has never been camping under canvass, although we did once borrow a motorhome. Ths kids want her to go campign this year and I am going to make sure it happens! Enjoy your breaks. Thanks for hosting #thatfridaylinky

  6. We camped often as kids and it was always great fun! Now that we have kids of our own we have been camping a few times and all I can say is the weather makes ALL the difference! We’ve had some miserable camping holidays in the rain where we’ve packed up and gone home. Having a good sized waterproof tent is key! #thatfridaylinky

  7. I’m actually in the middle of writing a huge “everything you need to go camping” type post. Happy to tag you in it when I’ve published. We spent over £600 on camping equipment last year and got the very best of everything and now aren’t sure if we want to go anymore! lol. We are just too fond of the home comforts of a hotel!

An electric hookup is basically just a great big socket. You can buy an electric hookup cable in any camping store. You plug the big blue end into the electric hookup at the camp site and the other end has regular sockets in it for you to use. We use ours for charging our phones, our tent heater, our electric coolbox and for my husbands hairdryer! (Yep… he can’t cope without that! PMSL).

  8. Camping is such fun, but such a LOT of work. Something that helped me a great deal was having a very specific list of every single item we needed to take along. We revised it, adding and substracting items, each time until we had it exactly right. Otherwise, the prep is just too overwhelming and you’ll decide camping trips are too much work. #ThatFridayLinky

  9. We’ve enjoyed some fabulous camping holidays as well as some terrible ones! The difference being the air bed. I cannot repeat this enough! Make sure you have a decent air bed and a warm sleeping bag. Being able to sleep will allow you to cope with the amazing British weather! Have fun! #thatfridaylinky

  10. This is definitely on my bucket list too. I’ve said to my husband we must do a camping trip finally this year! I’ll be reading for all your tips x #ThatFridayLinky

  11. You will have the most amazing time and make new family memories. Part of the fun is realising what you don’t have and either making do or getting creative. Enjoy! #ThatFridayLinky

  12. I have never been camping before and I have to admit I have a bit of a phobia of it! I just don’t know if I am built for it. My husband has and he likes it so I can’t rule it out in the future. I have seen before that people who camp are really passionate about it so I hope you have a great year of it! #thatfridaylinky

  13. Your top photo made me smile, I love to see old photos, so nostalgic and it reminded me of the days we used to camp, we had a caravan and a tent and camped at my families farm amongst the cows and silos of grain. Such happy memories…sadly I’ve not taken my children camping, it’s a memory I’d love to give them

  14. We love camping – such fun! Last year we hired a VW camper for Misery Guts’s 40th and went away for a week with 5 of us in the back of a van – the kids loved it! #ThatFridayLinky
