World Poetry Day with Viking

March 21, 2017

Today is World Poetry Day and I’ve teamed up with Viking to share with you the importance of writing. Viking sent me some arts and crafts products to help inspire me to share the love for literature and artistic writing, but first I wanted to talk to you about why writing is important.

We all know that it’s good to get our  creative juices flowing, not only is it good for our brains, it also helps to improve memory and emotional function. I’ve always loved writing. Long before I started using a computer, I would open up a brand new notebook and feel my heart skip a beat at the sight of an empty, clean, fresh page. I must admit I do have a bit of a love for stationary too! You just can’t beat a bit of good old fashioned pen and paper.

Viking sent me a gorgeous ‘gold feather’ style calligraphy pen, some pens, a mini canvas and easel, some stickers and paper.

Feeling inspired I sat at my desk and thought about what I would use the mini canvas for. I thought I’d write a short poem about ‘family’. I decided to use the letters in the word ‘family’ to start each sentence so that the word ‘family’ would run down the length of the canvas.

After writing my poem on paper first, I then used a pencil to write it onto the canvas. When I was happy with the placement I drew over it with some sharpie pens. In hindsight I should have thought about how the ink expands on the canvas as the last few lines are a bit squished, but to me there’s nothing better than something that’s been handmade and the ‘squishiness’ just adds to the charm! That’s what I keep telling myself anyway!

So here is my finished ‘artwork’.

What do you think? Will you be writing anything for world poetry day today?
