World Cancer Day

February 4, 2017

Today is World Cancer Day. A day in which we can explore what we can do to reduce the global burden of cancer.

My life has been affected by cancer.

My sister and I lost our mum at the age of 50 to ovarian cancer. That was in 2005. 12 years ago and I still remember it vividly. It’s something that will never ever go away and it’s also one of my biggest fears. To get cancer and leave behind my children. My sister and I were only 18 when we lost our mum and it’s had such a huge impact on our lives. That’s why I’m supporting World Cancer Day.

World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day is a chance for us all to reflect on what we can do, to make a pledge, and to take action. The theme is ‘We Can. I Can’. Whatever you chose to do, ‘We can. I can’, make a difference to the fight against cancer.

There are lots of different ways that you can get involved. You could choose run your own World Cancer Day campaign, support the campaign via social media or you could organise an event in your local area such as a fundraiser.

Over the years I have tried to do my part. My sister and I have taken part in Cancer Research UK’s race for life and raised money for this. I also donate money every month to Cancer Research UK. It’s not much, but the way that I look at it, is that something is better than nothing.

A few years ago, my husband and I also organised a children’s Christmas party in aid of Cancer Research and we raised quite a bit of money this way too.
