Winter Essentials – a Smart Coat

September 26, 2016

It is hard to believe that we are already entering the autumn season. This year has gone by fast, and it is already time to start preparing for the winter months.

This month I will be out shopping, and looking online for winter coats for the whole family, including my husband. He has a great jacket that he loves and has worn for a couple of years, but even he agrees it is time for something new.

As I have said before, his style is casual, but he likes to stay on trend, so I have been visiting menswear sites to pull together some ideas. He likes to buy his own clothes, but like most men does not like traipsing around the shops for hours, or browsing online for ages. Luckily, I do, so usually I take a look around, and let him know which retailers have jackets he is likely to like in stock. He then reviews my selections and chooses something he likes.

This year, most retailers are offering a great selection of men’s winter coats, so narrowing down the options for him has not been hard. Here is a quick roundup of what is available.

The classics make a comeback

It is great to see old favourites coming back in fashion. This year, both the parka and the bomber jacket have had something of a makeover. These 70s favourites have a timeless quality, which means that they are appealing to a whole new generation of men.

I particularly like the way designers have had fun with these iconic men’s jackets. The basic cut, and features are there, but many retailers are selling coats made from brighter, more modern fabrics, which means they do a better job of keeping you warm and dry.

Smart coats are on trend again

Looking at men’s fashion, I would say smart casual is back. That trend is certainly reflected in the men’s winter coats that I have seen.

There are certainly more old school tailored coats available this year, including tweed jackets, and lightweight short overcoats. Not really my husband’s style, but a look that many men will like, especially when they realise that these winter coats look just as good with jeans as they do when worn over a suit.

Puffers are back

I know from friends and family that down filled puffer jackets are exceptionally warm and comfortable, but I have never really liked them. To me they just looked too bulky and cumbersome, but I, and my husband, could be tempted to try them in 2016.

This is because the designers have given them a bit of a makeover. Most have used closer stitching, which helps to give them a slimmer, sleeker look. Much of the bulk is gone, and more tailored cuts make the puffer jackets of 2016 look far more like a regular coat.

As you can see, when it comes to men’s winter coats there is a bewildering level of choice. I hope that this post will give you a better idea of what is available, and enable you to quickly decide which styles of winter coats to buy.
