Why It’s Essential To Take Time For Yourself
‘Me time’ can seem like a fairly indulgent and selfish thing to focus on when you have a family, responsibilities, and even a career that you might have to invest your time in. For some people, the only ‘me-time’ they’re afforded is when they close the door of their home bathroom.
However, you don’t have to be an introvert to see the value of time spent on your own, or at least, time in which you focus some of your efforts into a private, solitary activity. This doesn’t mean you need to go on long hikes each day with nothing but your thoughts for company, and it doesn’t mean shutting everyone out.
It simply means recognizing that you, as a person, need time to gather your thoughts and perhaps invest your energies in an activity that might be separate from the necessary grind of daily life. If you can afford yourself that, and your partner that too, then your relationship may grow stronger.
In this guide, then, we hope you can see why and how it’s essential to take time for yourself, and the shape this could take over time:
Indulging Your Own Hobbies
It’s good to indulge in your own hobbies from time to time. This might sound like an ephemeral option, but the truth is that without something you can call your own, not your job, not necessarily something that you have to share with others (but you can if you’d like to, of course), then it can feel as though you have no safe space to return to and explore in when you need it.
It can be healthy to have a craft to work on. For some people, pruning bonsai trees and taking care of them over the years is a beautiful part of that. For others, finding the best model train manufacturers and taking some time to visit them online is key. It might be you have an interest in old classical novels, or even the latest poetry collections from cultures that are less represented in modern literature. A hobby is a perfect justification for taking time for yourself.
Clearing Your Head
When we’re around other people, we rarely stay completely quiet. From thoughts, opinions, discussions, to even heated disagreements, no matter what it is, we’ve all had it. Not only this, but the modern information age means that our smartphones are constantly pushing breaking news stories our way, the television stations are full of pundits discussing their takes on the latest developments, and everyone always has something to say.
It can be worthwhile to just clear your head away from that. Taking a calm walk in perfect silence, with no headphones, no podcasts, no audiobooks, just you and your dog in the park can be a great idea. We all need to clear our headspace outside of just sleeping from time to time – and quiet ambient reflection is the perfect place for it.
Creative Expression
Creative expression is also a worthwhile use of your time. We’d recommend painting, or drawing, or even writing when you get the chance. You may also find that learning to program, or to learn a new language through those terms can help you express yourself bit by bit. Of couse, the ultimate form of this involves picking up an instrument such as the guitar and trying to learn. Lessons like that can make a tremendous difference, and helps you express all the energies you hold internally, from frustration to anger to joy to love. It all makes a major difference.
Subconscious Thinking
One of the biggest mistakes we can make is to constantly ruminate about issues in our daily lives. You’ll notice that when you take ‘me time,’ focused on something that takes your attention and creative energies to enjoy, your subconscious mind will work for you. After a long walk in the park with your dog, or after painting a beautiful landscape, or after some time reading a book in the evening with a cup of warming tea, you’ll realize that the issue itself seems much clearer.
This is because often, we can put our brains into overdrive and overthink deeply. This is not healthy, and can actually cause much anxiety as well as mental fog. Some, the reason that taking time for yourself in a direct manner is so important is because it can quite literally help with your mental and personal wellbeing in more than just an academic sense, but an experiential sense too.
With this advice, we hope you can begin taking more time for yourself. We know you deserve it.
