AD| What You Should Know about Raising Healthy Kids
Collaborative post
Raising healthy kids isn’t something that happens by accident. If you’re not careful, it could be easy to teach your kids undesirable habits and mindsets that can be difficult for them to shake off in their adult years. Below, you’ll learn a few things about raising healthy kids that could really benefit you. If you don’t want to be the reason they have to pay for therapy in their later years, take a look:
Eating At Least One Meal As A Family Has Benefits
Sitting in front of the TV with dinner isn’t a good idea. If you can, eating at least one meal together as a family per day will be beneficial. Even if you have to get up earlier in the morning to have breakfast together, it’ll have a big impact on your kids. Studies show that eating one meal together as a family per day will make your kids less likely to give in to peer pressure, do better at school, and more.
You Need To Show Your Children Respect
Yes, you are there to parent and guide your children, but that doesn’t make you the boss of absolutely everything they do. You need to show them respect. For instance, you need to listen to them and take them seriously. Listening and understanding things from their perspective will go such a long way. Helping them is one thing, but criticism is very bad for their self esteem. Praise desired behaviours, and set limits and explain negative consequences for their behaviour without criticizing them. This means really watching your words and explaining exactly what you mean to them.
You Must Accept Your Children’s Feelings
Many children are not allowed to complain, feel sad, or express anger. This means many children grow up having to repress their feelings. Allowing your children to express their feelings will ensure they have a healthy outlet when they need it and help them to avoid depression in adulthood.
It’s not up to you to fix how your child feels, and their feelings don’t even need to be rational. You don’t have to talk them out of how they feel, but you can reassure them. Feeling angry is allowed, but that doesn’t mean you let them smash up a toy.
You Should Respect Your Children’s Boundaries
Many parents don’t realize that they aren’t doing this. Respecting thoughts and feelings is a way of respecting your children’s boundaries. Tickling your child even when they have asked you to stop, for example, is not respecting their boundaries. You might not think this is a big deal, but if you continue, you’re teaching them that their body is not theirs. You should also respect your child’s property, space, and privacy. Never, ever read their diary or ask their friends questions behind their backs.

It’s Not Always Up To You To Entertain Them
Although it’s up to you to raise your children and teach them the lessons that will help them to navigate life, it’s not up to you to entertain them all the time. Take them places, and suggest things they can do, sure. But if you’re child is always complaining that they are bored and asking you to come up with a solution, you don’t have to do it.
It’ll help your kids to use their imaginations and think of things to do themselves when they feel this way. It can be tough when they are used to being told exactly what to do in school all the time, but that’s why you should get them used to doing what they want to do at home. You can give them the tools, but don’t do all of the hard work for them.
They Want To Be In A Routine – Even If They Fight It
Kids will fight going to bed at a certain time. They’ll fight getting out of bed. They’ll fight getting in and out of the bath. Kids will fight simply to see if they can push boundaries and your buttons. However, kids subconsciously want and need to be in a routine. This gives them stability, and shows them that you care. Trying to stick to a consistent routine will do a lot for them, no matter how much they fight it.
Staying Up To Date With Health Appointments is Key
Staying up to date with health appointments will keep the whole family happy. You want your kids to grow up trusting medical professionals, not fearing them. Try a cosmetic dentist that has her doors open on Saturdays so you can all go together and ease their fears. Taking care of your own health in front of them will show them how important it is.
It’s Up To You To Set An Example
It really is up to you to set an example to your kids. How you talk about yourself sets an example to them. How you eat, exercise, and work sets an example. You do need to be so much more mindful when you have kids watching your every move, even if you think that they’re not paying much attention.

Where You Live Matters
You can only do so much to raise your kids. Where you live does matter. As well as living in a suitable home, your neighborhood should be friendly with a low crime rate. You should also make sure that the schools in the area are suitable for your kids. While they could potentially travel to go to a better school, this is something to consider when selecting your family home. Do plenty of research, and don’t just go for a good looking house without researching the area first.
Raising healthy kids isn’t the easiest of tasks. It may mean admitting where your own parents made mistakes with you, and where you could be continuing unhealthy patterns with your own kids. This isn’t always comfortable, and it means being very honest with yourself. However, if you can do this, then you’re already on the way to raising healthy children.
