What does 2024 have in store for OLED TVs?

March 26, 2024

Predicting the future is difficult – but not impossible.

So in the ever-changing world of technology, you might be wondering what 2024 has in store for TVs.

More specifically – especially if you’ve had your eye on an OLED TV – you might want to know if now’s the right time to invest.

Well, with the promise of more choice, increased screen sizes, and lower prices – you’re in luck!

Here we take a look at why buying an OLED TV in 2024 is a great idea…and don’t worry, we’ll keep it quick so you can get to the shops!

What is an OLED TV?

First, let’s be clear about what an OLED TV actually is.

The OLED part stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode television. This is the techie way of describing how the picture is displayed.

The screens on traditional televisions are lit with backlight, whereas OLED TVs use self-lighting pixels.

What does this mean?

Basically, that each screen pixel can work independently – switching on or off – creating greater control of the image and enhancing the vibrancy and sharpness of every picture displayed. The result is more realistic and lifelike images. And it’s this enhanced picture quality that demands a premium – until now!

How are OLED TVs likely to change?

The big changes to look out for from OLED TV in the 12 months ahead include:

  • Getting smaller

In most instances, the push is for TV screens to get bigger, not smaller, and OLED TVs have been no different.

Previously needing a large screen – 50 inches plus – to really experience the benefits, trying to find a small OLED TV was virtually impossible, which left smaller rooms and limited budgets out of the equation.

However, 2023 saw an exciting turn in events with LG announcing plans to produce smaller OLED screens. These offer the same picture quality expected from OLED but in a more compact form, with screen sizes between 30 and 50 inches available.

  • Getting cheaper

Until now, OLED has only been available at a premium – but it’s getting more affordable!

Ok, so one of the biggest reasons for this is that screens are getting smaller. But as with all technology, the more it matures, the more affordable it becomes, which is ideal if you’re looking for great picture quality at a great price.

  • Becoming more mainstream

LG are the sole manufacturers of OLED panels – but they do now supply the technology to numerous other big-name brands such as Panasonic, Sony and Philips.

With more screens on the market comes more competitive pricing and more choice, which is fast helping OLED to become a mainstream option.
